Billingbear Golf Course Player Reports

I played the 9-hole par-3 course with my two sons a couple of weeks back and what a joy it was. A couple of easy warm-up holes and then suddenly two consecutive tees with carries over water of 80 yards and 120 yards! This is no pitch-and-putt (one of the holes is over 200 yards). It's a delightful little course - great for beginners (who can opt to play off the red tees which bypass the lakes if they prefer) and brilliant practice for your short game if you're more experienced.
I played the Old Course at the weekend and the front 9 was perfect - lush fairways, excellent true greens and no queues. When we went round again for our second 9 it was a bit busier with a few short waits (certainly no worse than any other Pay & Play in the area). Although it's not a long course there are some well positioned bunkers guarding all but two of the greens and some challenging long rough for the more wayward drive. I had my best round in almost a year and we ended the 18 with a couple of drinks on the patio and some nice fresh home-cooked food. Perfect.

Have just played the Old Course, and considering its a pay and play type course, I found the course in excellent condition.. particularly the bunkers when other courses I've played appear to fill their bunkers with stuff more like concrete than sand, these were soft enough for you to flop the ball out of green-side bunkers.. top marks to the groundkeepers. I've only been playing for a few months, and so I found the course a good challenge.. but not an impossible one.. this is a nice course for the high handicaper due to the width of the fairways.
Off the course, the clubhouse is basic, but functional.
I'll definitely be returning here again.

I played Billingbear Old Course on the 2nd August 2006 - £12 for 9 holes. Friendly welcome from staff.
Interesting course and in good condition - the fairways are unsurprisingly a little dry after the current hot weather but the greens are large and true. There are a number of good strong holes that make you think - the 5th and 6th are two consecutive doglegs with greens surrounded by bunkers and a lake.
I would recommend Billingbear to anyone lokking to play in the area.

I played the old course with my dad and brothers, it was a lovely surprise to find the course in such good condition after the wet weather we had been through. Although not long it is by no means a walk in the park, if you do not show it some respect it will bite you, it did me. When I get the chance I will definately go back. Well worth trying for any golfer.
The club house although small by some standards is warm and inviting as are the staff.

Have just played the Old course for the first time in ages. It's in excellent condition, both greens & fairways & still very good value for money. The addition of the new clubhouse is a definite bonus, with good food on offer. The only thing missing in the past was somewhere to sit & enjoy some food & drink at the end of the round. This is now sorted & I will definitely visit more often in the future.

What a pleasant suprise, we played the old course. The condition of the course is first class, when many others are on winter tee's the tee areas here were excellet. With a begining par 5, they have 4 more par 4's and three par 3's. Some interesting and challenging holes. Friendly staff and £12 per round at the weekend was great value. I will definately play agaain.
Gareth Owen (England) 20/10/03
We played the par three side of the course on a glorious autumnal afternoon. Its a lovely way to spend the afternoon, the course was in great condition and for a couple of hackers like ourselves a good challenge. The drive from the M4 is sprinkled with pleasent pubs and a very entertaining garden centre. Well worth the time and money and wetted our apetite for the old course.

Have been playing Billingbear throughout the winter - and it has remained in excellent condition. Now we are in the Summer it is superb! Both fairways and greens are immaculate. Not a long course (and only 9 holes), but not often crowded (except Sunday mornings and evenings!) Highly recomended!

Billingbear golf course is one of those hidden gems! To start, there is a great little 9 hole par-3 course - certainly not a pitch-and-putt! Two of the holes are over a lake!! The greens are undulating and very good. Then there is the old Course - although only 9 holes, and not terribly long, again, the greens are superb, the fairways well maintained, and generally a great little course! Only disadvantage is the club house is a portakabin, with no licence. However, the whole atmosphere is very personal - tea and coffee on a make-it-youself basis! Highly recommended as a quick round (not crowded) - but take a cheque book - no cards accepted! 8/10
