This course is made harder for the visitor, No information is avaiable ie: No Yardage cards, No course layout on the rear of the score cards and only distances from the tee to the green on the tee boards. The pro did inform us there were markers at 150 to the green, not really a help if your playing over hills or on dog legs (which applys to most holes). When you have to guess where to hit the ball and keep finding your self off the fairways you soon get fed up especially if you are striking the ball well. Course was in good condition green fees are reasonable, wont bother again unless they sell a yardage card or better still show the hole layout on the tee board. Make sure you ask for the winter special which includes lunch for £2.00 extra they dont inform you unless you ask. Played 2/11/07

From Dave S, member at Lords.

The second review is a little unfair, I think, and certainly, for the average player this is not an easy course. Maybe he just had a very bad round on account of the sloping lies, river, pulpit tees, tiered greens and other features that make this course so interesting and was venting his spleen. Lords golf is always challenging although I'll agree it can be muddy in places, especially the bridges, after heavy rain and it is as well to remember that the fairways and greens, particularly those exposed to the wind, can dry out very quickly. It can also be hard work if you're not reasonably fit.

They are a friendly bunch of staff and there are always people on the course playing. The facilities and food are good and the green fees quite reasonable. Well worth a try, although if you have been used to playing a "beginners paradise" be prepared to add a few (dozen) shots to your usual score. My favourite holes? the P5 3rd, P3 7th and P4 14th and 16th. Least favourite? The poxy 5th where you drive through a corridor of trees over a river and up to a raised green with a deep gravel pit on the left. GRRRR

Having played this course several years ago when it was very wet and generally poor I was looking forward to playing it in drier conditions especially after the reported improvements. I'm afraid I was very disappointed again. It is basically a large hilly field with a very open undefined layout. The greens were in poor condition, rock hard, bare with rabbit scrapes or similar in places. They were also nearly all very small and circular and placed on plateaus. The fairways were also very hard and bare in places, but luckily it was still pick and place. Except for the difficulty of getting the ball to stay on the green it is generally very easy. On the plus side the staff were very friendly and the clubhouse was nice, but for £24 go to many of the other courses around for better value.

This course has developed quite well over the years. Now with new owners and a bit more investment in my opinion it has potential to become one of the really good courses around essex.

It does not suffer from the samey feel of some courses where one hole is pretty much like another. Every hole offers a different challenge and when the wind blows you will really struggle to keep to your handicap.

Not for the faint hearted as it is quite hilly and still suffers a bit following heavy rain. But on the whole for what you get the green fees are very reasonable and the round is really a great experience. Great value for money!!

I used to be a member at The Notleys but left a few years ago as the previous owner didn't, in my opinion, develop the course itself and allowed pay-and-play to dominate over memberships. Having played it a couple of times this year, all I can say is "what a difference!!" The layout is mostly unchanged, but the standard of green-keeping has improved significantly, a proper professional and shop has been installed and yet the green-fees are still very reasonable. The only concern is the fact that a river runs throught the middle of the course and has been known to occasionally breach its banks. The fairways (clay-based) can be muddy after heavy rains. All that said, it's a really nice, friendly and good-value set up.
