Morley Hayes Golf Club Player Reports

This is a large new development for the area and includes Hotel, Restaurant, Bars, an 18 hole and 9 hole golf course. I first visited Morely Hayes for a dinner evening at the formal Dovecote restaurant a couple of years ago and found the food and service very excellent so I can highly recommend you have a meal here. The other more casual Roosters Bar and Restaurant is also very good.

The Manor 18 hole golf course is another matter. I am a low handicap golfer from the US but originally grew up in the area. I come back each year and play the local courses. For a UK course this is a long course at 6,953 from the back blue tees but unfortunately length isn't everything and I found it easy and fairly boring to play. Many holes have the same feel and are fairly featureless, offering no penalty other than rough for an errant drive as there are very few fairway bunkers and only occasional trees. There is nothing wrong with an open looking course as long as each hole has some distinctive character. Without any challenge off the tee the game seems to drag. The course is built on gentle slopes so its easy to walk and there are a couple of good holes but not enough to hold my interest.

Perhaps as time goes by the course will mature and changes will be made to make this a more interesting layout. The clubhouse and other facilities, including a 9-hole course, and the driving range are excellent - its a pity that the main course lets it down. Don't get me wrong, you may enjoy playing this and high hiandicappers will find it a pleasant round, its just that when a course is billed as 'championship' you expect a little more than average.

Nice course in good condition. Would think that its not too tough a challenge for lower handicap golfers. Some holes had a little bit of a 'samey' feel about them.

Played this course at the w/end with our society ( 31 members attended). Found the course setting a real delight. Although not a particularly mature course the fairways are well sculptured with semi rough and deep rough making positioning off the tee a pre requisite to score well. In addition the well placed water hazards make club selection even more important. The facilities off course are excellent with a driving range and the clubhouse provides a good selection of food and drink. Well worth the visit although the price may seem a little steep for the package provided. Suggest this will be a course that features on most players " must do " list once fully matured

I have played Morley Hayes quite a few time now whilst visiting the area since 2001 up to this year 2006 and have found it quite a difficult course if you should visit the rough then your next shot has to be a percentage shot to just get back into play.

The fairways are shaped well and the green and good apart from when they are wet as you leave shoe impressions on them.

The water is well placed and that can catch you out if you dont hit the right shot the club house and restuarants are really good and the food excellent i look forward to playing there again 2007.

Morley Hayes is used on the Euro Pro Tour, I struggle to see why. I found it fairly flat and featureless. I am a 2 handicapper and I knocked it round in 71, -1 off the back tees without even playing to the best of my ability. I feel the green fee is extortionate for this standard of course. Lucky I was playing in a competition, and it only cost me 20 pounds.

Played Morley Hayes in May 2004. A newish course which is amongst the longer course I have played. Well laid out, with well placed bunkers, lakes ditches etc and well maintained. It plays a lot harder than it looks; with mostly wide fairways and shortish looking rough, you may think it will be easy but although you’ll tend to find your ball if you stray just off the fairway, the rough is that lush that you’ll do well to get any distance with your next shot.

I’m keen to get back as I couldn’t putt for toffee that day, but that’s no reflection on the greens, which seems pretty good.
