Played off white tees 16/06/08 in almost incesent rain and the wind driving viciously in your face on holes played back towards the Clubhouse - a westerly at a guess?

This is a tough track. They hold County and National amateur Championships here, it's a regular qualifier for the Open, and you can see why. This is a tough course at the best of times - a beast when played in the conditions described.

That said, this is a terrific track. Fairways are tight, no simply diving for driver here. Bunkers are deep and costly, rough is thick and penalising. Greens are in speedy, true condition despite the appalling weather. Undulations abound on just about every green, some of which are huge.

Good practice facilities and a good pro shop. My only criticism is one I would level at many golf clubs - the practice putting green was a totally different pace to those on the course. Clubhouse is a bit of a rabbit warren in all honesty, the catering was ok but nothing special.

Great day out though - real quality.

An excellent course! I played two rounds here on a Friday in late May, and the course was fairly deserted. I am a 15-handicapper and played to about 18, so it's perhaps not the most difficult course. This includes the fact I lost three balls off the tee - all swallowed up by the heather. To be ultra-critical, the course does not have any absolutely outstanding holes - just loads of really good ones! The par three 7th and par three 14th are almost identical - absolutely parallel with each other. The 18th is a brute of a finishing hole. Nice pint of Timothy Taylor in the clubhouse, which - unusually - has lots of small rooms as opposed to one large bar, afterwards.

Absolute class from start to finish.

Played a while ago and have been back to watch Open Qualifying because to me Alwoodley is the best course I have ever played. They have a late afternoon deal available for twilight golf which I booked on the net. I received a friendly reply from the Assistant Secretary straight away and played the next day on what is a superb layout.

Hardly saw a soul (the club has few members) after teeing off from the chateau-style clubhouse.

The first two are gently par fours and after that you step over the road onto the third and into a secluded golf heaven on the heathland.

Too many great holes to describe (tough par threes/fantastic par fives lined with heather) but the overall experience is unforgettable. When I returned and walked round during last year's Open Qualifying the course had lost none of its charm with the crisp, springy turf was as inviting as ever.

Golf heaven.

Fabulous!

This is one of the finest courses I've played - typical McKenzie features with distances hard to judge with the eye due to dips and mounds in front of the greens. Good risk/reward equations on the tee, none more so than the second where a big tee shot can leave little more than a wedge to the green but anything offline is punished severely.

My colleague and I both compared it favourably to the Hotchkiss course at Woodhall Spa, praise indeed.

I will be back to do it again as soon as I can save up the £60!

This is probably the finest golf course you are likely to find in Yorkshire. Every whole poses its own unique challenges. The golfer must be on top of his game to post a good score. An experience not to be missed
