Situated just outside Hereford on the beautiful River Wye in a parkland setting, this is a course of two distinct 9's. The first is hilly, running away from the river round a hill, the back 9 playing in the relatively flat meadows running alongside the river. Each of the 9's has its own distinct flavor which adds to the variety of the play but also splits a game into two separate halves - its what you remember about the round.
The Lodge itself is an impressive hotel standing high above the river with superb view of the back 9 and the river from the popular patio area outside the bar. Because the Lodge is halfway up the hill the 10th is a short 122 yard par 3 leading steeply down the hill to the river meadows and the final 100yds of the 18th turns steeply up the hill to the Lodge making for a rather artifical start and end of the back 9, although the 10th could be compared to the short 106yd par 3 at Pebble - minus the Pacific ocean. The course is well maintained and the greens play true.
Despite the fact that there are some quirks to this course it is enjoyable to play with several holes including the par 4 1st playing much harder than it looks - make sure you hit the fairway off the tee and don't be timid as this is a hard green to hit from a long way back. I find the front 9 plays much harder than the back with the 459 yard 3rd and the 176yd par 3 4th also presenting a challenge - you need to have your game together from the start when playing Belmont Lodge. These tough starting holes and the hilly front 9 give way to a much calmer and easier feeling when playing the back 9 in the meadow, which is the reverse feeling of many courses where the tough holes end the round. I think this is one of the reasons Belmont Lodge feels slightly different from other courses you play.
At 6,511 yards from the back tees this is reasonably long with no really weak holes unless you have an issue with the 10th. I am a low handicapper from the US and always try and play this when I am in the area and suggest you do the same.

What a gem !! Welcomed by helpful & friendly staff & fellow golfers (which are sometimes hard to find)Played with the sun shining which made the views even better. The Golf course is tight in places & club selection is important. Greens were fast & immaculate, fairways neat & tidy, hazards were hazardous (some Seve shots required if you go astray). This course has got the lot. Well worth a visit & on 2fore1's an absolute bargain. Will definately return again soon.

Our Society of 20 played this course on 8th May. Very efficient and set off exactly at the booked time. Greens exceptionally fast, go beyond the pin and the undulations can make the ball very difficult to stop. The rough was generally very long and could make an offline shot difficult to find. Some good holes on both nines but you need to be patient, straight and accurate to achieve a good score.

3 of us booked a 1 night DB&B 36 holes package through GolfBreaks.com
Excellent stay, top quality food & accomodation, great value for money.
Course was in good condition for March, some greens have been damaged by disease but this was not a major problem. Everyone in Lodge & Pro-shop were very helpful & friendly.
Highly recommended & will return for sure.
One last thing, if you see a ball stuck up the oak tree at the front of the 7th green, it's ours!
