Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel and Country Club Player Reports
Tom George (England) 14/09/07
It looks a pushover on paper, looking fairly short, but this is actually a reasonable test, with lots of hills, small greens and when the wind got up it made it even tougher.
Very welcoming clubhouse, but quite expensive. Having said that, it was a great day out and we got the green fee at 1/2 price so we can't complain.
The tees are fine for men, but I don't know how the ladies manage. It looks as if some of the lasies tees have just been plonked their rather than situated by anyone from the R&A!

16 of us have just had our annual golf weekend at Breadsall Priory. We played the Priory course on Saturday in scorching conditions. The course is a tough challenge in warm, dry conditions as, although not long, it is very hilly with many elevated tees and other dramatic changes in elevation throughout the course. Some of the fairways are severely sloped which makes them hard to hit in dry conditions as the ball tends to run off to the side. The fairways, however, are in very good condition overall.
What I liked about the Priory is the diversity of the holes, where brains rather than brawn will bring the greatest rewards. Best hole, for me, was the 11th; A high tee, driving over the road to a fairway far below you.
The greens are very good and run true and are a good test with several on two levels. They could have done with more watering however as they were very hard and it was difficult getting the ball to 'stick'. The 18th was like playing Augusta, with balls coming up short, running back down to the bottom tier and leaving another tough putt.
The hotel is nice with pleasant rooms and comfy beds. The food was some of the best we have had. My only criticism would be the quality of the beer which was particularly poor, especially considering the prices!
To summarise… good, challenging course in top condition with a nice variety of unusual holes.

My father has been a member of this excellent club for over a year now and we play each time I venture up from London. For the monthly fee he pays you really can’t fault it. Both the Priory and the Moorland courses have their own unique challenges. The Priory course rewards accuracy off the tee rather than length. Gung-ho drives don’t always leave you in prime position so course management comes into play. One gripe is the spacing of the tee times – 7 minutes gaps I think. Far too short! Favourite holes would probably be the Par 4 12th (road-side green) on the Priory and the Par 4 7th (lovely secluded tee-off area) on the Moorland.
From what I here the green fees for non-members are fairly high (£40 per round) and don’t compare favourably to some of the other course nearby.

Played Priory course mid-week and very busy with corporate and casual hotel players - not a problem if things keep moving however keep in mind that course etiquette is not one of these groups strong points and it did become tiresome trying to get round as a two ball. Just as we thought we were getting through the main crowd we turned up on the 10th tee only to find a "golfer" taking four fresh air shots before managing to connect and send the ball 50 yards left into the undergrowth. Why was this person ever allowed onto what is undoubtably a challenging and enjoyable course - but not for beginners. Greens were good and virtually every hole had a test of some sort - however it needs mentioned that the 10th hole is an absolute shocker, very quirky and deserves no place on this quality of course. All in all a very good golf challenge, spoilt by the volume of traffic but only recommended as a 2-4-1 option, the £20 green fee not bad value but full price is over the top.

played the priory course sat 11 sep as a 3 ball in less than 4 hours in the morning, and almost 5 hours in the afternoon, marshalling problems and in my opinion and not to be biased but too many people who are not of a good standrd to play a championship course were hacking away!!! the course is a great test with every hole a different test with great views, sloping fairways, true greens, and of course for me challenging bunkers, deep in places especially on the 3rd (14 bunker shots ouch!!!!) playing medal too, good marker guideson the course, and the trick is to play to the fairways although not so wide,i like the par 4 12th where you have to play over the entrance road to the complex surrounding by 2 bunkers with a gradient putting green,DO NOT BE SHORT OF THE PIN, as craig found to his disgust and disbelieve, on the green for 2 and six putted, what a laugh!!!!!! the course is busy, and i like every hole, 18th even as a gallery, the residents from the hotel in thier rooms can admire your putting!!! a great little stop-over is the halfway house, with coffee bacon and stella !!!!art reasonable prices, beter than the hotel being it a marriott, the couse staff in every department a real help and very friendly, the price !!!well for us a steal, shop around is my advice as breadsall as some great offers, would like to have a go at the moorland next time, overhall 8 out of 10,and iam sure next time it will be even better, give it a go and good luck !!!!

Played both courses over the winter and concur with previous reports as regards price, definitely a course to use 2-4-1 vouchers on. Note: they accept them at weekends which many courses do not. Also, they frequently give out further vouchers (for this venue only)for those planning return visits. Those with back problems might struggle on the priory course, very up and down with sloping fairways a frequent feature, some tough narrow tee shots too - not for the faint hearted! More likely to encounter temp greens on Priory, drainage a problem in some areas. Moorland more forgiving, expansive course better suited to the higher handicapper. Staff among the friendliest I've ever encountered, I'll be back in the summer for sure.
