Very tough course and very windy on a bad day. Being a member I've experienced all the weather conditions.
In the summer the course is fantastic and you can tee off at much later times and still fit a 18 holes in.
The course is great for high and low handicap players and make it a great day out.

I played Cleeve Hill in July 2006. £25 for a day's golf proved excellent value. The scenery was stunning with panoramic views pretty much all the time. The course was in good condition though I instigated a local rule involving a free drop from sheep's droppings. Interesting holes, friendly staff and members, and a test of your fitness. All in all, a great day's golf.

Played twice in July 2006. Though I imagine its always windy at Cleeve Hill, the first time was windier than the second time which resulted in numerous discussions amongst our 4 ball about club selection. Needless to say, none of us, irrespective of scores on the previous hole, wanted to tee of first.
We enjoyed both days immensely. Its a golf course full of character (not to mention sheep droppings) with excellent views and a some very memorable holes (6th 3 par, 12th 4 par and 14th 3 par come to mind). Also the hilly terrain provides for an excellent walk (confirmed by 3 friends who accompanied us but did not play).
The blind tee off's are not a problem as the line is quite clearly marked, fairways broad and the rough forgiving. Hazards, in terms of bunkers, are few and far between (I dont think I hit one during my 36 holes) and one can gain significant yardage with the ball running along nicely.
It was useful to know the line onto the greens especially on the 1st, the 10th and the 18th ( Hint - bounce it on the right slope and it rolls onto the green) and so easier to play the 2nd time around.
We are high handicappers (18-28) but thought the course gave us all a chance.
Highly recommended.

Cleeve Hill is a total antidote to everything that represents the 'Americanisation' of golf and is a wonderful experience for it.
We played here on Good Friday in near-perfect conditions but I can imagine that the wind can easily wreak total havoc, as just about everyone else on this page has testified.
But it's in that very challenge that, for me at least, lies the inherent appeal of golf. The creativity it demands of the player to hit every shot in the book, and then invent some more. The fact that, a driver into the teeth of the wind can travel as far as a pitching wedge with God's breath behind it. The fact that the course never, ever plays the same.
Anyway, I digress... Generally speaking, there's enough room off the tee at Cleeve Hill to really give it a crash but go wayward and you'll often be left with longer approaches from awkward angles into tricky greens that are surrounded by the scope for very tricky chip shots.
The Par 3s are very good and help negate some of the weaker par 4s. My favourite hole was the Par 3 sixth, which is reminiscent of the 7th at Rye, only slightly less brutal on the wayward shot. The toughest sequence comes in holes 12-14, all of which are long par 4s. Advise caution when contemplating your second to the 13th, which has a very narrow entrance to a green set inside a dry moat.
Personally, I didn't have any problem with the blind shots as there's little really punitive rough to lose your ball in if you stray off-line.
We found the greens were also receptive at this time of year, but members advised this was not the case in the summer. Overall they were in good condition and, on some holes, were surprisingly quick.
We played two rounds but if you're a newcomer here, my advice is to go to the website of Cleeve Cloud GC (the resident club at Cleeve Hill) and take note of the hints on their Scorecard page. Interestingly, the course also arguably plays easier off the whites, which turns two long par 4s off the yellows into par 5s and one of the par 3s into a very short par 4.
The staff were very friendly and we paid just £25 for the day, which was ridiculously good value. And I haven't even mentioned the views….
I can't imagine many places I'd rather be on a warm summer's evening.
7.25/10
