Duxbury Park Golf Club (Municipal) Player Reports

I have played this course a lot during the last 10 years - in the summer. It used to be my favourite course at one time.It is a nice course with some challenging holes .The 12th is my particular favourite.
Unfortunately things have gone badly downhill here in recent years.
Its strictly a summer course due to poor drainage and maintenence. It used to be good value but thats all changed now as the running of the course has been sub contracted to a private company (Glendale golf) who profit from it. The price of a round has been increasing way above the inflation rate and the same applies to the attached cafe and shop. Its a shame that some of this money is not used to improve the drainage which is absolutely apalling and getting worse due to the lack of investment.
The course itself is quite good in the summer but is to be avoided like the plague between October to April. It resembles a mire in places and cant handle even modest amounts of rain. Also there is a lot of temporary tees and greens in use during the winter months.
A new unwelcome practise here has just been brought to my attention. To book a weekend round now they are now asking you to pay in advance with a credit/debit card. This is disgusting in my opinion as one has to book 6-7 days in advance. If on the booked day comes and its raining heavy players should have the right to ring up and cancel. You cant do this now - well you can but you will still pay for not playing. So they pocket a full days takings even if the course becomes waterlogged and players have to change their mind. If the drainage was improved they would not be having as many cncellations due to bad weather. It looks like the days of pay and play are finished here. This practise can be summed up in one word - greed.
When your local councillor comes asking for votes tell them about this and ask them to give these municipal courses back to the people and maintain them themselves and cut out the middle men. We pay enough council tax and should not have to put up with this.
I hope you find this review enlightining and remember if your playing here in wet weather bring you wellies,
regards,
Mike.

played it on the 30th of March, after the deluge of rain on Saturday.
very wet and most bunkers full of water.
Greens were in good nick for this time of year.
Excellent value at £16.50.
Looking forward to going back in the summer when it's dry.
Play it!

I have played golf at Duxbury over a 28 year period (although over the last 18 years less frequently). It breaks my heart to see some of the changes that have taken place, such as the removal of the bushes lining the 12th fairway on the right, this I suspect was undertake to speed up play (hackers so often losing their balls). The grass bunker on the 7th was only introduced as a way of reducing maintenance, it is not in keeping with the character of the course and I personally would like to see it reinstated as a sand trap along with the bunker at the front left of the 2nd green which has been grass filled.
A lot could be done to further improve Duxbury as a challenging course as it lacks yardage. 20+ years ago golf technology was such that distances attainable were far less than today and concequently Duxbury has been reduced to a pitch and putt course especially in summer when the fairways are hard. Indeed it is very rare I would require anything more than a wedge for my second shot on the par fours and all three par 5's are easily reachable in two, the 13th especially which is simply a joke when played as a par 5 offering no REAL danger to the percentage golfer.
It was proposed very many years ago to extend the 12th tee back to perimeter of the course, this could easily be done and would go some way to rectify the addition of the winter greens to the main green and the conseqent reduction on the course yardage (this I believe being taken from the green centre, I may however be incorrect in this assumption). Further yardage increases throughout the course could be achieved, the first tee could be brought all the way back to the coach house (Glendale offices! (what a waste as they would make an ideal club house if only the enterprise was their)) having first removed a number of trees to accomodate.
Come on Glendale, yes you are making some investment,(heaven knows were the return will come from) however the asthetics of the course and its challenge could be imporved upon rather than trying to maintain this mediocca standard.
Nonetheless I would recommend Duxbury, just a pitty its not privatley run.

Super course, challenging enough for every handicap. Fairways could do with a trim. Only real problem here is the drainage as some areas are very wet. Still a bargain at £15 for a weekend round. 10th and 12th are the holes everyone will remember.

The course is probably one of the best in the north west, on a par with Walton Hall. The only issue has ever been its playability. Even in early summer the drainage off the fairway is poor, so if you stray you can lose a plugged ball. Very frustrating. Course is usually considered unplayable from November to March by all but the management. I hope they can solve this with the private investment they're currently seeking. The course could be the best in England if run well.

Neil Parr (England) 05/03/05
i have played this course many times and really enjoy it as everyone says the 12th is a cracking hole were you can wind shoulders up at let loose.but for me i like the 10th all round grrreat course and value for money so give this one a go
Alan Hodges (England) 21/01/05
this is probably one of the best courses in the area. its a municipal, but a good one at that!
iv played this course for nearly 8 years now and i can honestly say its a challenge every time.
a mixture of open and tree lined fareways makes it a mixed bag with the difficulty of each hole.
my particular favourites, the 8th, avoid hitting behind the BIG tree,or your not getting there in two...the 12th must be everyone's fave. a hole that looks longer than it is,IF you can reach the top of the hill its a clear shot to a raised green,if not,try a blind shot to a lowered fairway.
for just over a tenner you cant go wrong, its a must play for anyone!
enjoy
Dave Fleming (UK) 30/08/03
If there's a better municipal in the north west then I haven't played it. Agree with all previous comments on quality and value. 12th hole is a good 'un.
rich (uk) 06/06/03
played this course as a fourball on 5/6/03. what an absolute bargain for less than a tenner each. definitley ranks as one of the best municipals I have played, my only complaint was that the fairways could do with a trim as they were a little long in places and sometimes a bit undistinguished from the rough. Other than this though 9/10 it wasn't even too congested as some municipals can be.

Great course, Great Condition, Great Price! What more can you ask for? Tough (but fair) golf course, greens in excellent condition! In fact the whole course was in great condition. A lot of private (expensive) courses are in worse condition and not as enjoyable. Go and play it today!
Chas Hanvy (England) 13/07/02
A "Superb" Course. I [with friends] play it at least 7 tims per Year. Winter Tees and Greens "can" be a pain, but if I had to give a rating, it would rate 8.0 to 9.9, depending on season. BUT don't expect to play to your Handicap, cos it's a tricky little so and so.
It REALLY is an enjoyable experience. :-)
stu (english) 26/04/02
It is still a good course with fantastic views.
BUT the greens are getting bald in places.
Still good to play though

JULY 2001 - An excellent course. By far the best muni in the NorthWest, the course is in better nick than most private clubs. Some very challenging holes and great views. A nice day out.

As a beginner I found the course to be testing, but playable. Even with the wet conditions the fairways and greens were in good condition. Great views and no queues anywhere.
Very impressed, a bargain for 11 quid.

An outstanding parkland municipal course with many challenging holes, the 12th being the most difficult....a definate must for golfers of all abilities and at £8 an absolute bargain, this course is far better maintained than some of the country club courses I have played..some of the greens are in need of repair (3rd).
() 19/08/00
brilliant £8 what a bargain, at £7 each for a 4 ball v.bargainous.
some great holes and well looked after, i would pay £15-£20 for this course
dave () 31/07/00
undulating parkland course, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. some challenging holes - 12th hole being the toughest (despite not being stroke index 1). fairways in excellent condition for a course played so often, but greens are rather sluggish. represents excellent value at only £8
