The final day of Cornwall 2008 and, as always, the best was saved till last (at least in terms of conventional course rankings).
To me, this course comes across as somewhat schizophrenic: some good links holes but a fairly anodyne section after the turn (with the exception of the very tough 10th), that weaves its way around the Church and feels out of kilter with the rest of the layout. That may seem a tad harsh – but then this is a course that is ranked in the top 50 in UK & Ireland, so it should be judged accordingly.
I think the 2nd could be the best hole on the course: a long par 4 usually into the wind with a blind tee shot and demanding approach but unfortunately I played it like a muppet so will assess further on my next visit. Also up there is the 5th, a lovely par 3 over a marsh area, and of course the infamous Himalayas hole – mercifully its gargantuan bunker didn’t claim any casualties amongst us.
Top marks to the Dark Destroyer who destroyed the back 9 in conditions that started ominously, progressively deteriorated, and ended up being absolutely filthy.
Congratulations also went to Young B for finally getting his first birdie of the week on the 1st – even though that joy was shortlived as the Dark Destroyer made up an incredible 15 stableford points to relegate him to the wooden spoon position.
Returning to the clubhouse, as the wind howled and the rain lashed down, plans for a second round were unfortunately rapidly aborted. However, Young B was tickled by the overwhelmingly pleasant service of the young gentleman behind the bar and Jeeves again happily walked away with the weekly stableford title, although after more of a challenge than in 2007.
Next year, it's almost certain the destination will be a maiden voyage to the links of the Emerald Isle - so if you're around in early July, we may well see you there...

This was the first time I'd played St Enodoc, and I have to say after 36 holes on a breezy, but bright day, I walked off wishing we were playing there all week.
The true test of greatness in a golf course I believe is the ability to walk off, remebering not just one or two nice holes, but an array of them, and this course meets that criteria fully. From the undulating 1st, the punishing long 2nd, the downhill dogleg tight 3rd, to the himalayas bunker on the 6th, and the hugely difficult par 4 10th all the way through to the long 18th, each has its memorable aspects. Only 1 or 2 slightly weaker holes, but they are more than made up for by the rest. Great course!

This course is a dream for anyone that has ever enjoyed picking up a golf club. I'd say that the best moment I had whilst playing the course six times in 3 days was on the fourth round, on a glorious still winter evening, as the light was fading. Pink sky was overhead and the dunes were soaking up the last of the low evening sun to give an almighty breathtaking experience. I can second the previous statements about the 10th, a shockingly difficult par 4. I was fortunate to get a 4 on the 16th but apart form that and a few pars dotted on the card, for most of my rounds this course tore my game apart. even with a slight wind factor and blind tee shots, the rough is something that you should never wish on anyone (apart from an opponent perhaps), as it is an absolute nightmare.
That said, I will be returning soon to this wonderland of Golf, rated 2nd best english course in the world recently by Golf World, and not surprisingly either.
If you play any course in the UK, i would struggle to choose between this, Kingsbarns and the Old Course, but i think i would choose S Enodoc most times due to the thrilling views more than anything else.

Our society has played the Holywell course for three years running & we are going again this year,we have thoroughly enjoyed the tests it throws at us. The course has always been in first class condition with excellent greens. If you have never played a links type course before this is ideal to cut your teeth on. The members are always polite & friendly. Enjoy.

A truly excellent course. I have played over 150 courses in the UK (incl some big names) and this is the best. Great variety of holes, some very narrow fairways which you'll not want to miss and lovely greens built into a settinge just made for a golf course.
You do however need to play it on a relatively still/bright day to appreciate the course and the scenery fully! Played it in a howling gale and found it punishing and quiet easy to lose your ball, then played it on a quieter day and found it fair, hugely enjoyable and a good score can be made.

St Enodoc is a James Braid masterpiece, up there with his very best.
If you are a fan of links golf you simply have to visit here, because the challenge that lies ahead will provide you with a truly memorable experience.
Cut through huge sand dunes and sweeping hills with danger around every corner every shot will tax you especially if the wind is up.
This course has a truly magical feel to it and the tranquility, scenery and challenge are just about as good as it gets.
One of those rare courses where you are already planning your return before you leave.
