I am 16 and hav been a member of the suffolk golf and country club since it was the swallow. i would first off like to say how much better the club and course has gt since the swallow chain has left.
i play most weekends and the members and staff are always friendly and happy to help.
the course has been described as to end of the spectrum. some people have sed it is easy and some have said it is very challenging.
my personal opinion is that the course is very challenging. on the front nine every whole has water on it that could have a ball unfortunatly fall in it.
i would say the greens and tee boxes need some work but i assure everyone that they are getting seen to and the bunkers have already been seen to.
the course may not be the most attractive course nor the most carismatic but it has a charm that brings many people to play it.
i agree that investment is needed but if more large societies and group come to play this should quickly bring in the money.
i would say a must play in suffolk due to the challenge it poses.

Just finished a two day, 3-round stay at the Suffolk Golf and Country Club. As a sizeable group we block booked through one of the online operators and played Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Executive summary would be nice course, shame about the hotel. First the course. Arriving on a very wet day we made our way to the par-5 first which has an elevated start to a narrow fairway and a dogleg right, probably after laying up. The course starter gave some useful information and off we went. This course has a lot of water, with many hazards in tricky places. The first has water both sides of the fairway. The second is a 180 yard par 3 with some water and bunkers but straightforward. The third is a slight dogleg left par 4 which needs two long hits to reach the green. The fourth is a nice par 5 with a broad fairway, the 2nd shot laying up at the corner. Beware water behind the left trees. The fifth is a short par 4 with a ditch placed to put off drivers. Laying up with a mid iron leaves a pitch over water. The sixth is a straightforward par 4 which will not hurt slicers! The seventh is a short 120 yard par 3 over water, with the 8th a lazy par 4 dogleg right with trouble right and short. The 9th is a long iron Par 4 to the near-right angle dogleg left, up to a raised green. Trouble right, big trouble left. Walking past the clubhouse (a halfway tea ‘shed’ is welcome) you reach the par 4 tenth which has a tricky tee position elevated and very close to the left boundary fence. Anything even slightly left is lost, wayward right are trees and a water ditch. Careful drives here! The 11th tee (longish par 4) is a bit of a walk and is at the head of a very tight drive. Left is woods and right will leave hard second shot or possibly water. 12 is a nice par 3, 13 a par 4 which rewards careful hitters. Left is woods, straight (if short) is likely to be water and right and long is also bad. Tough hole. 14 is nice uphill par 4 with a wide fairway. Long and right will be water. 15 is the third par 5 and rewards left of fairway big hits. Right will mean tangling with a large willow protecting water. 16 is an enormous par 4 which none of us reached even with two big hits and is stroke index 1. Right and big from the tee is unsighted and wet. 17 is a long (200yd) par 3 over ditches. The 18th is a par 5 which is a big drive and layup to the corner for dogleg right. Big hit right is onto the practice ground. A mid iron to the generous green completes the round. General comments on the course are that you have to cross a lot of fairways in play and this could get hairy when busy. The course looks like it holds water and may not be so great in mid winter but was in good condition generally. The hotel is clearly in need of some tighter management in particular the catering which was not really up to scratch although bar staff and pricing were friendly. Go to the course, stay elsewhere!

I've been a member now for 2 years and despite loosing hundreds of balls, I keep coming back for more. The course is challanging especialy for a mid/high handicap player like me. I would echo other sentiments that it is close to being a very good course, but lack of investment seems to hold it back. Good atmosphere in the club house and good food & drink go some way to make up for shortfalls on the course.

With a little bit more care and attention, this could be a really nice course.
For example the first tee is a little bit shabby, and some of the greens could do with a little more work, but is certainly a good challenge.
There are a couple of short par 4's. For example, the 5th is only about 290 yards but requires a 270 yard carry to reach the green.
The first can be very confusing, but having played it twice now, the way to play it is to play an iron for your second up the fairway over the last ditch, then play over the water for your third.
Get the ball in play and you can certainly score round here.

well worth the money a lot of work has really improved this course.some will find it tough going on this demanding course.(think they should give free golf balls, you can lose dozens in the water)well done to all for bringing course into shape

Played for the first time today on a Saturday on a 2-1 voucher (£30 for two). Course had water on every hole but not always in play. Fairways were in a reasonable condition, some better than others but overall average to good. Greens were reasonably true though needed a lot more water, good shots to the green were bouncing far too much and rolling for ages - even with a lob wedge on a couple of occasions! Of the two bunkers I played out of one needed sand loads more sand. Theres a few interesting holes - 11th, 18th are of note. I think if this course had a few more quid spent on it then it would have a lot of potential. As it is I would pay £15 for a weekends round but £30 - no way.
Use a voucher and give it a go if your reasonably local.

Very good course. All building work has disappeared and the course is in excellent shape. The greens are fast and well maintained.
The water hazards add that element of danger that on similar courses is lacking. GBP 25.00 for a Non-Member is not too bad, although GBP 20.00 for hiring a cart is a bit steep.
Well worth a visit.

I've organised 3 society days here with over 60 different people having now played here and everyone rates this course for its value.
Played this September. They have chopped off a bit of the 9th in order to accommodate a new hotel so some building work around but is contained and did not cause us any problems.
Very lush course compaired to some of the dry Cambridge fairways. Fair amount of water.
Go play it!

Having played this course last weekend I felt moved to warn others before they part with what is an unreasonably large green fee.
To ask for £30 for a round of golf on this building site is daylight robbery. The vast majority of the greens were appalling, you could have spent all day with a pitch mark repairer. The fairways, in parts, resembled a building site. The state of the course was a real shame as the use of what is limited space has been good and provides some interesting holes.
Be warned.
Craig
