I’ve heard quite a few people comment that Ogden is similar to a links course. It isn’t. It’s nothing at all like a links; it lacks the quality of turf, greens and bunkering you usually find on a links course. Ogden is what it is, a bleak, pure moorland course and quite a good one if you like that sort of thing.
The first few holes are slashed with streams and ditches and make for some interesting golf. Indeed the best hole on the course is probably the first, which is always a bit of a let down, although the long, difficult par 4 4th may run it close.
The course slowly rises up the moorland and from the 12th green to the 17th tee you play right on top of the moor. Although the views are great it is very bleak up here and the fairway grasses are very poor quality, this is by far the worst part of the course.
The 17th is a bit of a novelty hole, total crazy golf the first time you play it, I was going to hit 3 iron until my playing partner hit a 5 iron 30 yards through the green.
All in all quite a hard walk and only just worth it. Also no yardage charts were available, making the front 9 very difficult to negotiate and keep a score going. – 6/10.

Having joined the club approx 2 years ago,I find that only now am I able to take on this truly wonderful course and will hopefully play to the maximum handicap of 28.
The course is always in excellent order and the members are a friendly bunch. Finally,if anyone playing the course should find any top-flite 2000 with a smiley face marked on with indelble marker please be aware that they belong to me.And, lord knows I have lost plenty on this challenging and tough golf course.

I AGREE TOTALLY WITH MR DARRELL MITCHELL AND ONE DAY I WISH TO BE AS ACCOMPLISHED AT THE SPORT AS HIM.AFTER FINISHING A HOLE THE OTHER IS JUST A "CLUBS THROW" AWAY. AN ALL ROUND EXCELLENT COURSE.

HAVING PLAYED THE BRITISH OPEN AND OTHER PRO EVENTS I FOUND PLAYING THE OGDEN COURSE A GREAT CHALLENGE. BEING IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION IS A MUST TO TACKLE THE OGDEN LAYOUT DEMANDING HOLES TO LOOK OUT FOR ARE HOLES 1,2,3,4,5,12,14,16,17, THE HOLES MISSING ARE THE ONES YOU MIGHT ONLY LOSE ONE BALL. THE COURSE HAS SOME WONDERFULL VIEWS AND FULL OF WILDLIFE AND NATURAL HAZARDS.

I now live in Sydney but my early years of golf were played in the Halifax area. Anyone seeking to experience a good moorland course and who is reasonably accomplished i.e < 20 handicap-male,<30 female, should enjoy Halifax.A good start to the day with the walk from the old stone clubhouse across aflowing stream to the 1st,one of the best natural par 4's you will see and then a series of Par 3's and 4's which criss-cross
up the pennine valley. The 12th is a par 4 which requies an accurate tee shot up into a saddle shaped fairway and you are now in Bronte country. A few links style holes across the tops of the moor and then the 17th, an amazing Par 3 and the only truly downhill hole on the course takes you bake to stream level and the final hole, which shares a fairway with the 1st.Golf has been described as " a good walk spoilt",Halifax GC is a great walk and good value.

A physical and mental test of the highest order. Get to the 6th tee without a disaster on your card and you'll have a good round. Get to the 13th tee without a coronary, and you'll have a healthy life. Well worth a visit.
