Hawkstone Park Player Reports

Played the Hawkstone course on a windy day after a night of persistant rain. The condition of the course was excellent, greens played true, although slow (as expected) on several. Course layout is interesting with the middle few holes disappearing round a huge outcrop before returning back to join the main course.
The landscape is breathtaking at times, especially the 10th, 11th & 12th - outcrops of sandstone homing Buzzards which call as they ride the updraughts is worth the green fee if the game is going to pieces.
Holes to watch for - the 4th, with a ravine between fairway and green; the 13th, a cracking drive will scamper over the brow, leaving a pitch downhill onto the green; 16th is eagleable (!); 17th is a killer - get to the post and fly your second down onto the green - majical.
We will return to play the Championship course, if anything like this one...well....

Played both courses last week, we began with the Hawkstone and then the Championship the next day.
The weather had been good for golf courses and the condition of both was top notch.
The Hawkstone - The greens were slow but true and the pace of play was bordering on unacceptable, we took just under 5 hours to complete 18 with hold ups from the 3rd hole onwards. Whilst there is no stand out hole there are a number that make you think and would definitely play differently next time.
The Championship - This course was much quieter by comparison and allowed us to play at our own pace which was an hour less than the Hawkstone, the course whilst only a couple of hundred yards longer than the other on paper it played much longer. The greens were quicker and the course more challenging. I would imagine that a long spell of dry weather would effect the condition of this course quite badly compared to the other.
The service, food, beer and accommodation was excellent value for money, this is a good well run society course and worth a visit.

I must repeat the views of the reports below.
The Hawkstone course is, varied well presented and very picturesque.
The Championship course is not quite as well presented but still very good. Someone described the first 9 as tight but it is not too tight as to stop you enjoying it (you can get the big stick out).
The hotel is very comfortable and welcoming- the beer is quite cheap by hotel standards - the food is good. We played as a society of 14 on a Suday/Monday deal and everybody was delighted and wants to go back.

My friend and I played the Hawkstone Course yesterday (21/06/2009) and it was fantastic. Having played here a few years ago I had always wanted to go back and was not disappointed.
The course was in excellent condition, the greens were true and the overall condition was very high. The course is very challenging but also rewarding for good shots, with lots of interesting holes and fantastic surroundings.
The facilites off course are also excellent, with a well appointed clubhouse and pro shop to go along with the driving range and short game practice areas. A decent sized putting green also awaits you right next to the 1st tee.
I have no hesitation in recommending this course to others, although it was very bus in front and slow going at times the Hawkstone was very good indeed and well worth the wait we had on most holes.

We played both the Hawkestone course and the Championship course last Saturday as a group of 20. The arrangements with tee times for five four balls from 9am and then commencing again at 2pm worked perfectly and we were efficiently welcomed and directed to the appropriate tees. The Hawkestone was superbly presented- no two holes are the same and a course planner a very useful tool. An extremely enjoyable and challenging four hour round. We would certainly return.
The Championship course is ok for its type, feeling American in its design features but it did look as though it would have benefitted from some TLC in terms of its presentation on the day. The rough needed cutting and there was quite a contrast with what we had just seen on the Hawkestone. However, we enjoyed it and the venue as a centre for two rounds in a day works well with pre ordered sandwiches nicely presented and served.
Certainly a memorable day and we will return.

Played and stayed on 29-30th of june 2008 (sunday driver for £110). Played the championship course on the first day and was reasonably disapointed with the front 9. A VERY tight and compact loop of holes through trees looks as if it has been squeezed in, a little scruffy too. Back 9 is a lot better as it opens up and uses plenty water hazards, very american in feel. Hawkstone course was played on the second day and was great. 4-5 holes really stick in the mind, views were amazing as holes 10-12 cut through a rocky valley. Hotel smaller than the usual de vere/marriott types but nice enough. Prices didn't stick in the mind so were probably reasonable!
