I played Heworth in June and the course was in great condition. The rough was very tough,I think because of frequent rain but the green staff worked hard to keep it reasonable. The greens were excellent and true. I enjoyed the course very much despite having to play some of the holes a second time.

Played the course on the 14th August 2004 following our original choice of course being closed. The course was decent and the greens well kept though sharing the holes was frustrating at times. However, I have never been to a course where I was made to feel more unwelcome. This began in the shop when I was told I had to buy white socks, and continued throughout the round: ".need to tuck your shirts in gents", "...you should really shout fore", "those are not tailored shorts" etc...etc..... Wherever we looked, the local members scowled and sneered at us as if we were vermin, resulting in a very uncomfortable, unenjoyable round. These sort of draconian rules & attitudes give English Golf Clubs a bad name. If in the area, I would suggest giving your £20.00 green fees elsewhere - this club does not deserve them.

A nicely kept course but it became a little tedious on the back nine since there are only 11 different fairways and most of the shared holes had very little difference, except for a few extra yards, perhaps. The price for a round was £16 on a Thursday for me, and there is no half-round option. There were a few interesting holes. The par-3 second sticks in my mind, with hedges blocking most of the direct path - although only 4 or 5 feet high, they seemed imposing. All in all, not a bad round although a little more imagination in the tee placings may have made the back 9 a little more exciting.
