i have played high post witha society for a number of years and on returning this year was very disapointed to find that the club has seriously deteriorated. not entirily sure why but looks as if little effort is being made to maintain what was a brilliant little course

Having played Tidworth and Upavon, i again set off for wiltshire looking forward to a good days golf in the glorious june weather. We got to high post to find the same feel as the other two, in it being a rather quaint clubhouse with a ye old feel. The course itself plays as two loops, 11 and 7. With the back 7 being rather more open and inviting off the tee but playing down the side of a hill. The front loop is far more enclosed and requires good judgment off the tee but will reward good strikes with plenty of tempting shots in to the greens. The dance floors themselves appear relatively flat compared to today's modern crazy golf style greens but the test was in how subtle the breaks are. Putts will break without warning if u don't take the time to ride the line. I really enjoyed the layout and condition of the course, yes some of the greens and tee boxes are close but it does not spoil the round. Having played the three, i would venture this way to play them all again but with out doubt make High Post my first port of call. its a very solid little golf course and with our trusty 2-4-1 vouchers allowing us to play 29 holes for £20 represented outstanding value.

Beneath the busy flight path of Boscombe Down, High Post is another of the old, well-established courses that encircle Salisbury Plain and is certainly towards the superior end of them. It’s a classic well-draining Wiltshire downland course with good quality fairways and nicely firm, rapid greens.

As it’s name would suggest, the course is also well elevated and on the day we played, there was at least a 25 mph wind in attendance. In places, this is partly mitigated by the proliferation of large gorse bushes, but these can cause more than their own fair share of problems – more on which later.

The front nine is tighter than the back nine and after a good opening par 4, the second hole threatens to sink it’s teeth in: it’s a par 5 of only 487 yards off the whites but contains no less than 17 bunkers. Both the seventh (410 yards) and ninth (384 yards) are good, difficult par 4s. Peter Alliss lists the ninth in his selection of the best 18 holes in Great Britain (I thought it was good but not that good - can someone pls explain…?!?) Henry Cotton also said that the ninth (OK maybe I’m just ignorant then!) and sixteenth at High Post were two of the best holes he ever played.

The back nine is more open in places than the front but still throws up some demanding holes, not least the bunkerless 439-yard par 4 sixteenth and the tough uphill 411-yard eighteenth.

Throughout the course, there are a lot of large prickly gorse bushes (frequently lining the entire side of a fairway) and for the most part if you hit it in there, you might as well treat it as a lost ball. My playing partner and I scored well by playing a lot of strategic four and three irons off the tee for position and I would venture to say that, a couple of holes apart, leave the big stick in the bag unless you are very accurate with it.

The course is not long (6305 off the whites) and you can tell that space was at something of a premium when High Post was designed. There’s the tee box equivalent of Spaghetti Junction at holes 11, 14 and 16, with the greens of 13 and 15 adjacent as well.

At £30 for a midweek round, it is also not cheap but I would recommend is worth the experience of playing at least once.

...and any enlightening comments about just why the ninth is apparently so great also gratefully received!

Set on high ground, the course is flanked by a vey busy main road and is adjacent to Boscombe Down airfield which often provides a constant noise of low-flying jet aircraft to accompany your game. Apart from one hole that has around 14 bunkers, there is little to offer by way of a good test for one's golf. The course is configured in a somewhat claustrophobic square, at times requiring players to pass in close proximity to occupied tees! A run-of-the-mill course with a pleasant-enough clubhouse.

Immaculately presented golf course that will test players of all abilities and supported by facilities that would be the benchmark for other clubs. Whilst the fairways are excellent the greens must be the envy of many another club - their quality in the cold of March will outstretch others at any time of the year.

A challenging course that is always presented in top condition, the fairways are like playing off a manicured lawn. The greens are usually in superb condition even through the winter months.

An excellent clubhouse,with a variety of alcoholic beverages,and a good resturaunt with a varied menu.All in all a course that represents excellent value for money.
