I've played Hoylake on numerous occasions over the years and have usually found it to be an interesting test of golf. The course is semi-links and possesses a varied set of holes which can challenge all levels of golfer.

Hoylake is located over the road from the famous Royal Liverpool Golf Club, host to the 2006 Open. Its fairly simple to get to, being signposted from the town centre.

There's a decent pro shop and clubhouse to boot, servng simple snacks from the bar. There's a putting green and practise area.

The last time we played was a Saturday afternoon which turned out to be one of the longest rounds of golf we've ever endured. The queue on the first was 45 minutes, to which we had to wait on each tee as there was already two groups waiting. This meant it took us over an hour and a half to complete the first 4 holes, to which we picked up and left. To be fair however this is one of the few complaints I've ever had to make about this course; it was a Saturday so bound to be busy but it looked to us (and a few other golfers we spoke to) that there was no organisation with the tee times and that people were just turning up and playing regardless if they had a time booked or not.

This experience has unfortunately put our society off playing muni's - we used to frequent them 90% of the time but we came to the conclusion its best to pay the extra and avoid the hassle.

To be fair to Hoylake however this problem seems confined to the weekends; the course is a joy to play when quieter.

Holes to look out for -

5th - Long par 4 with a road crossing the fairway some 250 yards out. A straight hole that can be mastered, it has however wrecked my card in the past, especially when the winds up.

18th - A great finishing hole, doglegging left from the tee, with a small brook crossing the fairway. The green lies just in front of the clubhouse.

The greens have always been much better than an average muni's as well as the tees, which have always been well cared for.

If you fancy a testing round of golf for excellent value Hoylake's the one. Avoid like the plague at weekends however!!!

Phil Derry (played Hoylake 18/03/2007) This course benefited greatly from the open championship last year. Previous drainage problems have been addressed and the course is now a true delight. The longer holes boast wide fairways so your confident from the tee, and the shorter holes well protected with bunkers so accuaracy is key. I played the course in winter conditions and just one temp. green was in play (due to drainage work around the green) a real credit to the staff. A very enjoyable course, and the scene of my first eagle 2. Well worth a visit.

I was fortunate to play the course on 18.1.04 with three members. I found the course in general to play well, especially the greens for this time of year. However, as a previous comment shows, little or nothing has been done in the last 12 months to solve the drainage problems. Walking to several tees I found myself either up to my ankles in mud or water. For a small outlay by Wirral County Council they could improve this course beyond recognition through proper drainage in designated areas.

Hoylake is a very fair course,if you are straight and long it will suit your game but beware of the fairway ditches on hole 8,the 7th hole is its picture hole, a par 3 with a pond on the right and O.B. on the left to capture a wayward shot.

With only 2 par 5's and some long par 4's this is a good test of golf for anyone, especially of the White tee's on a typical windy day on this semi links course.

Fairly good course although the drainage is not what you would expect from a semi links course. The bunkers are poorly maintained at any time of year but the fairways and greens are ok. A fair mix of wide open fairways and fussy little sods of holes with unexpected water hazards
