Ilkley Golf Club Player Reports

A 'nice' course rather than anything too brutal. Typical Yorkshire countryside surrounds the course, and once out on the course the view of the Moors is prectacular on a sunny day.
Ilkley was probably an absolute brute before the onset of modern equipment, distance balls and square-headed drivers. In fact, the whole club and town seems to be (in a nice way) in a 1960's 'Heartbeat' style time-warp!
Play it for the scenery, the friendly welcome in the clubhouse, the teas & scones and the knowledge that you are following in the footsteps of Colin Montgomerie and Make James who learnt their trade here. Don't come here expecting three figure scores on a 7000 yard beast of a course, just enjoy the day!
The greens were better when I played than when the previous reviewer did. The bunkers are OK I guess (didn't really go in them!) and the fairways are a pleasure to hit off.

I'd been told prior to my visit that Ilkely was a real jewel in the crown for West Yorkshire golf, a stunning course and a real challenge of golf. Everyone I spoke to told me it was one of the very best around, so I looked forward to my visit with high expectations.
I can only be honest and say that my hopes were sadly dashed. Maybe it was my own fault for listening to the hype, but it just didn't do it for me.
For me, for a course to stick in the memory, there should be a hole or two that are one or all of the following - well set out, stunning, a real challenge or an absolute brute! Bar a couple of holes than ran along the riverside, which were ok but none of the above, the rest of the course rolls into one long memory of utter dullness.
The greens were unbelievably slow, and I mean slow. I played at the height of summer 2006, and I'd have been better taking a mallet out as opposed to my putter. I had played a course not a million miles away which I was told "wasn't a patch on Ilkley" a couple of days earlier, and their greens were ten times better. Disappointing isn't the word.
I had the misfortune of visiting a couple of bunkers, at least that's what I think they were, during my round. One had the merest of sand in it, and I mean the merest, and the other had more stones in it than I'd expect to find on Blackpool beech. They were in worse condition than I'd expect to see on the poorest of municipals.
By the time I reached the 18th I just wanted to get off. My partner told me I needed a double bogey to play to my handicap, but I really wasn't interested. The boredom of the day had taken hold and I really did just want to go in.
The Course isn't particularly long. There aren't really any holes of note that I could say are signature holes. The greens were slow. The bunkers awful. Worth £40+ per round? Definitely, uncategorically it wasn't.
The Clubhouse would save the day. I went to the bar and hung around for about 15 muinutes waiting in a huge queue of one to be served when the girl behind the bar finally appeared with a sandwich in hand. I hadn't met the guy waiting at the bar before, but by the time she had appeared I knew his name, where he played golf, a bit about his family, what he did for a living and where he was going on holiday. How disappointed she looked that she would have to wait until she served us to eat it.
The catering was good in fairness, but first impressions count and the bar staff had just about capped off my day.
I certainly won't be rushing back to play this "gem of a course".

Taking advantage of the twilight offer at this fabulous course has become an annual June ritual - it is a fair trek from the centre of Leeds at rush hour but is well worth it.
It is a truly lovely course. Not long or overly challenging - and no really stunning holes to stand out in the memory, but for beauty whilst it ambles along the River Wharfe it cannot be beaten. Well worth the trip out and the Harry Ramsdens on the way home!

very impressed with everyone at the golf club.warm welcome from the pro on arrival, excellent catering service, and the course was obviously well cared for by greenkeepers who took the time to do even the small jobs properly. the design of the course makes it a good test for every standard of golfer with the high handicapper unlikely to lose too many balls.the telephone manner from the admin. staff was also first class when making initial enquiries about tee times. I think the club is well run at every level and visitors will be rewarded with a day out to enjoy

A stunningly beautiful course alongside the River Wharfe, one of the holes being on an island in the river! Some challenging holes in a glorious setting. This course must rate as one of the finest in Yorkshire, well worth a visit.
