Killiow Golf Club Player Reports
Martin Eady (England) 01/07/08
Played Killiow on two occasions whilst on holiday during week 23rd June.
We found this to be a very good experience with just a couple of small qualifications to that statement.
The clubhouse seemed to be a bit wooden and old, however as soon as you walked in you found yourself in a pleasant environment with a comfortable and welcoming bar/restaurant overlooking the driving range. The food was good and a big flat screen TV meant we could watch Wimbledon in a really nice setting. The changing rooms appeared to be recently revamped as it was a modern, well equipped amenity with plenty of room and new shower facilities. It really did belie the out-dated and run-down facade people see as they walk from the car park.
The staff we met were very courteous and friendly and helped make our visits pleasurable.
The course, and in particular the fairways and tees, were in excellent condition. The greens were firm (bordering on hard)and quite undulating, however they were putting nicely. Many of them had two or three tier greens, which cause a great deal of trouble if your putting is a little awry.
The rough is cut down to a uniform couple of inches, which makes it easy to find balls but difficult to play an accurate shot.
The course runs through some well wooded areas with plenty of mature trees. This is complimented with stone walls (apparently been there for a very long time!) coming into play on several occasions.
The views are stunning across the Cornish countryside and as the course is a fair way from any main road, it made the experience very tranquil indeed.
At just under 6,000 yards off the yellows, it isn't long but is a fair test for all but the most accomplished player.
The couple of qualifications? One is that the driving range is woefully short. A well-struck 6-iron will surely see your ball sail over the trees at the back. This held the score for "General Facilities" back a bit.
Secondly the greens were not only firm (and therefore difficult to hold) but also small. These two features made the approach game very tricky and almost unfair! If they could make the greens a little bigger and/or keep them a bit softer it would definitely make the game more enjoyable albeit taking one of its primary defences away.
At £25 for a weekday round and £15 for a twilight (after 5.30pm) it made for very good value.

played the course early morning,11/07/07 Course is well maintained and will be one for the future.
Paid £25 was well worth it greens and fairways were in excellent condition even with all the rain we've had. As a pay and play course its one not to miss out on, wide fairways and greens that are quick with many breaks. Some holes are straight forward and more bunkers could be placed around greens to make it more of a challenge, but
well worth the visit and easy to find.
Didn't use the bar area but looker rooms and shower rooms are new and very smart looking.

What a superb course. A challenge for high and low handicaps alike. The course has a mixed bag of holes with greenkeepers with a wicked sense of humour with the flag postions.
Will be back next year
