Laleham Golf Club Player Reports

Played Laleham on the 09/03/08. We played on a Sunday and i was very suprised to see how lovely and quiet the course was, which is refreshing as many public courses on a Sunday are ridiculously busy and slow.
The club house and general location is lovely, just offset from the Thames.
The course was fairly enjoyable to play. The holes are nicely spaced apart and vary. The general condition of the course was very good especially the greens. At a price of £16 on a 2-fore-1 voucher i wasn't expecting much but ended up pleasantly suprised.
The only slight issue is that the course isn't very difficult and h/c's should be hit here.
At £16 this is great value.

The golf course (although flat) has some interesting and varied holes. Accuracy is of paramount importance as the rough and small bushes/trees plus the excellant pot hole bunkers, make you 'take your medicine' if you're off line. Good scores could be had here but you need to plot your way around as opposed to just smashing driver down every fairway. Just the one negative comment, that being told to remove a bonafide golf jacket in the clubhouse (by a chap in denim jeans) because it contained a zipper down the front!

I am a member at Laleham having just joined a few months back and thought I would offer an up to date view of the course.
Despite the rainy summer being a hindrance to most golfing activity, it had probably benefited the course at Laleham! The course has been in great condition as it is very fast draining. This means the fairways are lush green and that there are pretty much no boggy patches! The greens themselves are also playing very well. Their pace has obviously varied a little throughout the year with maintenance etc. but generally they run fast and true and there’s reasonable, but not unfair undulation too which adds to the interest and challenge! In my mind Wimbledon Common is the only place comparable in price I have seen better.
As for the layout, there is more to Laleham than meets the eye! It would be easy to look at some pictures and think there were plenty of easy holes; that is not the case! From the back tees many holes place a premium on the accuracy of your tee shot. The course is over 100 years old and whilst it is not a forest course, there are plenty of fully mature trees to frame certain holes and the rough is usually quite punishing. To spice it up further, the bunkers tend to be deep and pot hole styled; they wouldn't look out of place on a links!
In terms of weakness the only major one would probably be that the course is very flat. This makes for easy walking but obviously means that extra element of variety is not a factor. None the less all sorts of shots are needed to score well and competitions are rarely won with anything better than 3 under, playing to your handicap will be a challenge!
The clubhouse and bar are definitely above average, and they must have done something with the showers in reference to the 1997 quote as they are now perfectly decent. The pro shop whilst being small offers what you would expect and along with the obligatory practice green and nets there is also a short game area and a small collect your own range (170 yrds).
Overall it's a good honest club that offers decent value for money both for members and visitors. There are more spectacular courses around, but most are more costly, and you're unlikely to have anything to complain about upon leaving the club; other than perhaps the drive around the lane back to the main road, but that's hardly a damper on a day.

My first ever round at Laleham was played during the July heatwave, so the course was very, very, dry and the fairways were all brown. It certainly made the greens tough to stop the ball on too, although they were in decent condition to putt from once you'd managed to get on the "dance floor". Actually, I can't really fault the condition of the course, which played pretty well given the conditions.
However, I'm not sure that had the course been in better condition I would be rushing back there any time soon. There just seems to be too many holes that just look like each other. The par 3's are okay, but the par 4's and 5's tend to just be different length versions of the same hole.
The par 4 13th is probably the standout hole of the longer holes, but it's certainly no easy par.

This is a mature, flat parkland course very close to the River Thames. Despite its proximity to the river it appears to drain surprisingly well. Some of the holes are quite tricky, and overall the course has an ambience of having been around a long time as it was founded in 1903. The course is reasonably well maintained, but not immaculate. Not the friendliest of places; the club professional told us to start on the 10th and having got to the tee we were promptly berrated by senior members for trying cut in. Similarly in the clubhouse we were greeted by querying scowls rather than welcoming smiles. Not bad value though at £15 each on a 241.

I too found the drive to the course somewhat tedious, but the course although not the prettiest, was a good challenge and the greens were as true as i have putted on for many a month.
surprising was how firm amd dry the place was condidering the recent weather, no trolley ban and no sign of any temp greens.
The course was tidy and played very well.
The catering lacked imagination, but was cheap and very efficient.
considering how little we paid I thought it was fantastic value and will certainly return

Played here on a weekday afternoon using a 2FORE1 voucher (£15 each). There's a long & winding single track road into the course which definitely isn't Magnolia Drive & doesn't raise expectations.Once in the car park there's a bit of a walk to the clubhouse which we did a few times due to the fact we were told to change our shoes in the changing rooms by not friendliest pro i've ever met .(can't remember the last time i was asked to do this).
The course itself is flat, nondescript, uninspiring & a bit scruffy around the edges .It's not scenic or tranquil either due to noise from the nearby M3 & a reservoir that runs along the edge of the course. The front 9 is the better of the two 9s & it gets better as you approach the turn.A lot of holes run straight up & down. The courses defence are the greens which are either small & undulating or large & undulating .Usually these would be deemed to be interesting but after a while i just found them annoying. Also some of the greens are a bit upturned saucerish & hitting an approach shot near the pin & then fining it over the back of the green or rolling off the edge & into a bunker also becomes annoying.
The tees were good ,the fairways bone dry & scruffy & the greens which ran well were a bit diseased .Another quibble was after both pulling our opening tee shots into the fairly open tree line we ended up losing both balls due to the amount of leaves on the ground (why can't the greenkeepers clear these?).Also, there was no semi rough so it goes from fairway into fairly severe rough which involves quite a bit of mooching around if you're off line.
The members semmed friendly & although it's fairly good value for money i wouldn't recommend the golfing experience here.

I played thecourse on Tuesday 30th September in a society meeting.
I foud the facilities to be good all round .
I understand that they are going to upgrade the shower facilities soon.
The course played well but the fairways are desperate for rain.\r\nThe greens also reflected how dry the year has been.
Despite these points am excellent day was had by all.

A flat golf course, more challenging than first impressions lead you.\r\nsuper putting conditions. Tees were excellent. Good bunkers.\r\nSome of the fairways were lacking grass, all in all an enjoyable place to play golf.
