Liphook Golf Club Player Reports
Howard Dunmall (England) 24/04/08
Played Liphook in April 2008 as part of a group of 8 staying at nearby Old Thorns. We were due to play 36 holes but morning torrential rain made us change our arrangements. The staff at the course could not have been more helpful, re-arranging tee times and allowing us to play 8 holes before lunch then 18 afterwards.
I knew the club was well established and highly rated, and I was expecting the slightly "stuffy" atmosphere of a traditional club. Nothing could have been further from the truth.... everyone was so very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The club house is a delight, with wonderful lighntess and views across the course, from the first tee and greemn, the fourth green and the eighteenth.
The course itself is just a pleasure to play. Beautifully presented, fair, challenging, interesting, frustrating, breathtaking. I would not want to single out any hole because each has its own interest.
Because of the change of arrangements, we were late teeing off in the afternoon, and were not due back in until after the scheduled closing of the clubhouse. The wonderful steward, a credit to any establishment, kept the bar open especially for us, allowing us to finish the day with a couple of pints of superb London Pride.
All of us in our group had a fantastic day. I think a few have already made enquiries about country membership. Play it, enjoy it.

Played here midweek August 07 (£25 after 4 p.m.)
Funny course this one.Although it's highly regarded & very visually appealing i came off at the end of the round disappointed & not that fussed about playing it again.
The reasons for this were, firstly, the heather.Although it looks pretty ,basically if you went in it it was either a lost ball or you had to chop out.Fine, don't go in it but the problem was that a lot of holes felt tight & restrictive .This meant off the tee instead of using my driver, which i generally hit straight, i ended up nudging fairway woods around & only took out the driver 4 times which is a bit too strategic for my liking.More room off the tee would help the fun factor.
This also contributed to a slow pace of play as everyone else seemed to be looking for balls in the heather as well ( being held up by 2 idiots all the way round having lost 2 holes on a 3 ball didn't help either). If you played here in a 4 ball i'd say that you'd be looking for someone's ball on most holes which becomes a pain & if you were going well in a medal, one bad shot would put the kybosh on it.
Also ,the course felt like it was in sections & bitty due to roads going through the course.e.g.you walk along the road to get to 15 then play 2 holes , come back & walk across the entrance road & play the last 2.
Course was very busy for midweek with members but i did find the club to be very welcoming.
The par 3's were good (although ,unusually ,you start with a 200 yarder at the 1st)& other holes worthy of mention were 8,12 & 16. Holes 7 to 14 were the best sequence for me.
Individually ,there are plenty of decent holes but collectively the whole thing just didn't work for me.
Overall , a triumph of style over substance.

A traditional heathland course which is a superb layout and a pleasure to have played. The course was in great condition and I can recall every hole - it is hard to pick a favourite. It will take a return visit to work out the borrows on some of the excellent greens and the slopes around them but it was great to play a course where, even when you hit the green, two putting is far from straightforward. All the short holes stand out although this is not to detract from the rest of the course. Although not widely known it certainly deserves to be in Golf Monthly's top 50. Like many heathland courses Liphook is trying to encourage the heather to grow by felling some of the trees and this can only benefit the course.

This is a terrific classic heathland course that one cannot help but have a pleasant time at. The club staff and its members are very friendly and make it very easy to get a game.
As to the course, Croome and Simpson built one with a paucity of bunkers and let the land speak for itself. There are some wonderful par 3s like the 3rd, 7th and 11th that are as good as you'll find on a heathland course.
The par 4s most notably the 2nd with a severe right to left fairway are quite good. There are a bunch of short par 4s and the 16th is the jewel of those where one must carry a quarry on the approach or be wary of it on a long tee shot.
The short par 5 4th was Simpson's favorite hole and has a wonderful constellation of cross bunkers to contend with if you go for the green in two.
Overall, a pleasant place to play and should be on any itinerary of heathland courses.

Wonderful course. I honestly have never seen greens in such good condition (and I am from the US). The track is beautiful designed, very picturesque and contains an incredible variety of trees and vegetation. To top it all, the club has some of the friendliest members and staff I have ever met. So far, Liphook has provided my most memorable English golf experience. Will definitely be back for a visit.

Played here again after a more than 10 year hiatus and really glad I did. As usual with a heathland course it pays to be straight - even after the recent dry spell the heather is still formidable! Greens were superb - very true although a touch slower than they looked but that was a blessing given some of the pin positions. Hard fairways meant that the course was playing quite short but also meant that you could run it on or play to quite receptive greens. Overall an excellent day and to be able to play a course of this calibre at a weekend as a non-member is a big plus. Only criticism is the policy of starting all 3 and 4 balls on the tenth when it seemed that the first was totally unused.

Yet again liphook was in great nick, I played here
three years ago and still it is one of my favourite
courses.
The best time to play, is in the afternoon, it is
not so busy.
Check with the club for the price to play, as price
given on web is not updated, (£47.00 for day ticket).

In the all the 35 years of playing golf around the world i have never played on greens so firm and true, and we played on a day that had seen a lot of rain during the day, heaven knows how quick they would be after a spell of dry weather.
The rest of the course is worthy of the greens, and is a 'thinking players' course if you wish to complete a decent card.
Well worth a visit, we will be going back again.

Liphook is a tough challenge, with expansive heather punishing inaccuracy. The initial task is to get through the tough first 4 holes with your card intact - the fourth requires a long straight drive followed by an intimidating approach with a green that slopes towards the bunkers either side of the green. The course has stunning views and surrounds, particularll on the 11th - 13th holes.
Those who suffer the yips beware - the greens are lightening fast but beautifully true.
Gordon Ross () 09/11/99
This is a challenging and extremely pretty heathland course which requires thought to get round in a decent score. Very quick and true greens. There is a good variety of holes and a few undulations but nothing too hilly. This course is definitely worth a visit.
Mike Davies (H'cap 12) () 23/07/99
I last played this heavily wooded and parkland course about three years ago, at the height of a very dry spell. The greens were fast, but true and exceptionally well maintained. Some fairways are quite narrow, and bordered with thick heather, which is almost impossible to get out of, except by a chip out sideways, played with the strength of Tiger Woods! This is a course for the medium to low handicapper, although the high handicapper will also gain enjoyment to mix with his/her frustration! The club house is quite new and has good facilities. The staff were friendly and helpful, particularly the then pro, Steven Clay. For me, very good value all round.
