Loughton, poses a challenge to all golfers and is a great course to learn the mental skills require to become a great golfer.
Its 9 holes require visual awareness and careful shot planning which make you more aware of how to plan your approach to each hole. Thus improving your game and increasing your enjoyment.
I have planned this course over the past 3 years and just love it.
4 Things standout
(Note: I'm a fair weather golfer)
1. The greens are true and hold well.
2. The views from the hill on a clear day are amazing.
4. If you slightly unfit (like me) carrying your bag around this course, is a work-out!
(Advice: Take plenty of water with you.)
3. The wildlife, Horses, Foxes, Rabbits, Birds and Squirrels all add something extra to the surrondings. Especially if you live in London.

Have played this course a couple of times a year over the last 3 years, and in that time I have seen a consistent and steady improvment in the quality of the course.
Previous drainage problems seem to have been resolved, scrub areas have been smartened or remodelled and the greens have become truer and more consistent.
The maturity of the greenery around the course brings with it all the usual challenges, however the undulating geography of the land increases the difficulty and provides some great views over the surrounding areas.
For the occasional golfer, the traffic on the course and the layout of the holes means that the T's feel less inhibiting than many other courses, and so you can relax into each hole and let the difficulty of the course be the focus of your anxiety.
On the negaitve side, things which let the course down a little are:
(1) the T areas - a little smartening up and better management could provide the course with a far smarter and more professional feel
(2) Flag poles - A 6ft pole on one hole and 3ft pole on another doesn't help the players perspective when gauging distance and approach
(3) Club house - a tired portable building set in a tired, part gravel car park. Gives the entrance to the course an almost deserted look that has probably put off many a passing golfer. It also does nothing to encourage a visit to the clubhouse after a thirsty round.
Overall if you are looking for a challenging well maintained course that is value for money and mixes lengths of holes to provide full club use, then this is a course I would recommend you try.

I played this course for the first time in the pouring rain on the 2nd of November. I greatly enjoyed it, and its fairly challenging. The first 3 holes are a little mundane but after that things get much more interesting, with some very accurate chipping onto the greens required. Good for a quick game. The tees could do with a little more work. The greens are true.

I was told about this testing course by one of the members. On arriving i was made welcome and the course layout was explaind. While i was out playing i was fortunateto meet another member who was very plesent and told me hor to play a few of the holes. When i got back to the club house i later found out that the person who i had met was no other then the club captain and the course record holder. What better instruction could i have?
The course may only be a nine hole but is in no terms easy and even playing another nine holes i found myself in all types of difficult situations that you wouldnt expect from a course of this caliba. The greens were in excellent order and the coursde seems to having work carried out to make it better for the future.

It ain't no augusta but but it is a real gem for the winter. Being a member I have seen how much the mangement have done to make sure the course stays open for the winter. It's the the longest course but you have to be straight other wise you are going to have tough shot round, under and over trees. With the greens improving and changing every year each one is showing its own character. The course is beautifully hidden away on the edges of epping forest. In the summer a nice 9 holes after work watching the ever trying fox chasing the rabbits. A lovely warm membership group. The competition enrants are small but that adds to its warm feeling, and many a member finds it hard to leave.
A peach for keeping your game together!

This course is probally the best course for the mental side of the game, The hills are really good and it fells like you have played 18 holes just after 9 there are 3 hole that go down and up and if you hit a good driver can reach the green which i have only done once. The greens are quite slow. If you decide to go take a trolly as you will need one. The staff are very friendly and they now have the green tees open so you can choose between mats or greens. 6/10
