Nelson Golf Club Player Reports

Our small society enjoyed playing Nelson very much yesterday, despite the miserable wet weather we encountered for the front nine. Thankfully it cleared up enough on the back nine for us to get rid of the waterproofs and take in the views of the moors which surround the course. This is a very society friendly course. It isn't long but there is plenty of variety and it held up well to the soaking it received. Looks like the greens will be tricky in summer. We received a warm welcome and the catering was good quality too. I'd certainly recommend it to friends.

A real favourite of mine, always a friendly welcome awaits at Nelson and the Clubhouse and catering facilities are excellent.
The course is always in top condition, the greens really are a credit to the ground staff. Memorable holes include the par 5 third, driveable by the big hitters on a dry day and the par 4 5th where 2 good shots are required to a tricky undulating green.
Always a pleasure to visit Nelson.

Nelson Golf Course is set between 700 and 900 feet. The course is easy to walk with just one climb, the 8th.Open aspects delight with views, on a good day,as far as the white rose dales to the north and the red rose moors everywhere else. The recently refurbished clubhouse, which dates from 1924, allows superb views to the south west and over the 9th hole.Part time pay lockers are available for visitors which give back the quid on completion A busy seniors section abounds on most dry mornings and the draw for something called a swindle takes place at 12-30 on dry afternoons, except thursdays which is something called ladies day. So far as the golf is concerned Nelson offers players of all denominations a challenge. Out off bounds abound on the front nine, with hookers totally at risk on this outer nine although generous fairways give the the higher handicapper comfort but a longer second shot. Its worth spending a couple of quid to get the excellent and recently done yardage chart, a 5 minute study may save you tearing your hair. Nelson recently had their centenary and a competition took place to "name that hole". The result didn't alter the layout but focusses the mind on the threat of some of the names."The Quarry" "The Roughs" "Spectacles"

Nelson is an excellent course, reflected by the number of people on the members waiting list.
The Par 5 hole which is driveable is a very surprising hole as you walk over the top, the severe drop would make it an ideal sledging track in winter!
The 8th sticks out in my mind with a 150 yard blind shot to the green, wicked!
Overall a belting course in excellent condition, looking forward to playing it again on our annual Mens Trip from Bacup.

There are only two things that you can say about Nelson Golf Club because it is a very simple kind of a place. First of all I have to mention the openess and the distinct lack of interfearence witch makes this course so easy. Then thereis the third hole* A DRIVABLE PAR 5*!!!.
Andrew Colthart (England) 05/01/00
Nelson Golf Club is a very easy course to play as it is wide open and you can spray anywhere and still have a shot to the green. There is a selection of great golf holes to play at Nelson for example the par 5 3rd is drivable when it is dry, "yes thats a drivable par 5". Also the par 4 5th hole is an uphill hole that curves around and up to a tough undulating green. There is the par 4 14th that is a blind drive and then a second shot to an evil looking green that is easily spun off with a well conected mid iron.
