Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Golf Club Player Reports

hi to all at newbiggin golf club. im a relatively newby to golf.
anyway met up with a friend of mine on saturday around about 12. he was a member of the club so i did have some help on where to try and aim for on a very windy day, the wind blowing from the south west onto the north sea. the fairways were very tight indeed so accuracy was of the utmost. (aimed well left on the first few holes but still found the sea once. i thought even with my limited knowledge that the greens were the best i have played on. i was also pleased to see a frindly hello from other players as we past by eachother, (you dont find that at all golf clubs). i lost a total of 3 balls which for a high handicaper i thought wasnt to bad. yes you can see alcan and some houses on your left when you first tee off but doesnt the view of the sea and the northeast coast make up for that (others dont mention that in there report) could it be that they have a snobish side to them maybe)the club house is very nice and clean and there was a nice smile from the bar staff as they served me a shandy. i hope to play it again soon and once again i enjoyed my day. many thanks to bob and to all at newbiggin golf club.
yours
andy

i was part of a 4 ball playing at newbiggin on thursday 19th june and i have to strongly disagree with the last comments!
it may have been the weather on the day (it was VERY windy - enough to blow you off your feet nearly)! but the course just felt extremely unfair!
although the greens were in superb condition there just wasnt any fairway to hit at all! im guessing that the average width of the fairways were around 20 ft, so unless you were pin point accurate off the tee your ball would end up in the 1st cut of rough and you could basically kiss it goodbye! the rest of the rough was just unplayable.
its a real shame about the location of the course also, because like ive already said the greens were like velvet and great to putt on and i think with a little bit of imagination and some course manicure, if you could pick up the course and drop it somewhere on the east or west coast of scotland you could well pay around £50 to play the same course! the fact you play around a council estate with dogs and horses running free sort of spoiled it for me along with the backdrop of alcan power station!
we payed £20 each for our round and i personally felt that was WAY to high! a cheap deal of around 10 quid my encourage more people to play as we were almost the only group on there apart from a seniors match.
holes 5 and 6 were nice holes (if i remember correctly) but apart from those 2 the rest have been lost in my memory like many of the balls i lost!
sorry newbiggin - i wont be returning again!!!!!!!!!!!

Iam a member at newbiggin and have been for the last two seasons. The course is playing better now than it has in the last two years. compliments to drew and the rest of the greenkeepers. In my opinion the course is up there if not at the top of the links courses in the north east, and i have played some. Winter summer come down and give it a go, i am sure you will enjoy the experiance.

A testing Par 72 links course which is well maintained and worth a visit both in season and during the winter when it is rarely closed and does not employ winter greens.
First five holes played alongside the sea (the water does come into play, and the drive over a quarry inlet at the 5 tests the mettle !), Holes 6 to 9 run through interesting dune land and holes 10 to 18 meander back to the clubhouse on gently undulating links land where whin bushes and strategically placed streams must be avoided. Look out for the large "St Andrews" double greens at holes 2/16 and 5/9. Recently refurbished clubhouse provides friendly welcome.

Nice challenging course but in a terrible area.
The course borders a council estate and it is not uncommon to see cyclists on the fairways.
Sometime ago I visited and found a large area of turf had been removed during the night, apparently taken to lay a lawn in someones garden!
