Played Northenden for the first time this week.
The River Mersey runs alongside the first half dozen or so holes but doesn't really come into play unless you are ridiculously wild with your shots. Whilst, with the odd exception, not overly long, you do have to hit straight to score around here as anything off the beaten track is punished by well established trees, bunkers or water hazards. Irons off some tees may be order of the day when you know where you're going.
The course itself was in very good nick. Big tee beds well maintained, fairways cut tight and semi rough that was at that length to be tough but not overly penal. The greens were in good condition, pretty quick, very true and receptive. I think some greens won't have a straight putt on them - undulating isn't the word! But they are a great challenge as opposed to being just downright daft.
Off the course are good pratice facilities. The only suprise to me was the Clubhouse, which whilst fit for purpose in all honesty looked a little tired and dated. Catering was ok, though nothing to really write home about, though staff and stewards were extremely welcoming and friendly.
That said, however, I believe they've spent an awful lot of money on the greens over the past couple of years or so and it was definitely worth it. I'd much prefer any Club to spend money improving the course than the Clubhouse. Taking into mind the quality of the course and the overall cost of the package provided, I think this course provides good value for money.

Visited Northenden on 5th October with our small Golf Society.
We were due to first visit Northenden 2 years ago but had to cancel as a project had begun to replace all 18 greens. Two years down the line, it was certainly worth the wait.
I have never played at Augusta, and doubt that I ever will, but these new greens at Northenden can't be far off by way of a comparison. There must be scope for about 15 differnt pin positions on each one.
Every green was in snooker table condition with so many undulations which made for some great entertainment........and a few expletives!
But, it's not all about the greens, the rest of the course was in perfect condition with great presentation. There is a good variety of holes and it is not overly long but you do need to be accurate off the tee.
Off the course the facilities in the Clubhouse are excellent, as was the friendly welcome and "no fuss" approach of the Secretary Mr Powell.
Having visited most of the courses in this small area I would have to say that Northenden now has a distinct advantage over all the others, or you could say it has 18 advantages!

My partner and I turned up as visitors unexpectedly last Sunday at 11.15, having been let down by another course at the last minute. We were made welcome and were able to get out straight away just before a competition. The course provides a variety of challenges and some lovely holes. The River Mersey swallows up any sliced shot on the first half dozen holes, as I found to my cost! Excellent value at 16 pounds with a 2 fore 1 voucher. Recommended.
