Northwood Golf Club Ltd Player Reports
Nick Holmes (England) 16/05/08
Hmmmm.....having read that the greens have been re-layed I was fairly unimpressed, nothing special and it was very difficult to get my ball to hold any of them.
This is an excellent example of a club that is still living somewhat in the past, very stuffy members and not overly welcoming. It was a relief to get the first tee over so that the members could stop staring at us.
Not a bad challenge of golf but £35 a round I thought was a little steep for the type of course this is.

To anyone considering visiting Northwood, this is an up-to-date review of the course and club.
The Clubhouse: Old, tacky exterior. Situated directly on main road. Locker room and changing room in excellent condition.
The Course: Greens are in excellent condition, although slower than they look. Fairways are very wide and generous. But not enough variation across the holes. Holes 4 - 10 are SEVEN consecutive Par 4s! There are only 2 Par 5s, and 3 Par 3s.
The holes in front of the clubhouse (1,7,8,9) are very open, and not so cosy. Holes 7 and 9 even share the same green.
The holes on the back 9 are much more secluded, tucked away into rows of tree-lined fairways.
Handicap Guide:
0-9: Length not a problem, look for birdies on the two Par 5s. Do no rush for your driver on the shorter Par 4s. You will see why. Expect to match your handicap on this course.
11-18: A challenging course with many dog-leg Par 4s. The key to matching your handicap will be your mid-iron approach shots on the Par 4s. Best preparation on the range before playing this course? Practise your 6-8 irons to small targets. This really will decide your round, believe me.
18+: One piece of advice? Bring lots of spare balls!
And lastly....
The fun part: Look out for the paper towel dispenser in the changing rooms. It functions by waving your hand in front of it. Enjoy!

I have to say what a load of rubbish the last contribor made.
This course is still by far and away the best in the area, and even after the long hot spell we have just had it was presented in first class condition. The new greens are granted a little slow but do run true and given they are only just over a year old they are going to be first class when bedded down.
We found every single member of staff very helpfull, especially the pro who managed to squeeze us on late on a Sunday afternoon.
As for the course itself it is hard to find fault with any hole, the 5th must be one of the best holes in the South of England and even a bogey can be counted as not such a bad score. The 12th follows a fairly straight away par 5 and is demanding right up to your last putt, again a bogey is no disgrace.
The club have installed a new balcony which overlooks the 1st,18th and 10th and is just a perfect spot to unwind after you round

Northwood is an example of what not to do to a venerable, historic, course: tear up the greens and re-lay them to USGA specification. This shaping is totally out of character with this classic course. The modern bunkers are also utterly characterless, the type you'd find on some modern monstrosity. And this was the course with the famous "Death or Glory" bunker/hole.
A shame, it's a fine course spoiled.

This is a born-again course and club: new greens (a very bold move and a very worthwhile one), improved maintenance of the course, much modernisation of the clubhouse (and much modernisation of attitudes!). I greatly enjoyed playing this very fair test (even if I couldn't work out what to do at the par-3 third). . . Northwood is an example of a "traditional" club coming to terms with the technology and standards of the 21st century. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

I was lucky enough to be invited to play at Northwood recently. I had played there before about two years ago and could not believe the changes that have taken place.
It is not just the new greens. Apparently the bunkers have all been drained into the stream that runs through the course and makes life a lot easier than standing in water!
The club house has been improved with new changing rooms and there is a general feel of friendliness around the place.
I am a high handicapper but would imagine that this course would be more than a challenge to those in single figures.
It was interesting that the course remained opened in the rain the week before last when another well known course in the area had to close because of flooding.
I will be back.
