Perivale Park Golf Club Player Reports

Kenny Haley (England) 18/02/07

I learned to play golf on this course when i was 13. I still go back and play this course every sunday because of my love for this place, very helpful staff and they make a nice cup of tea in the cafe.

I have heard many say they lose balls in the brook on the 6th and i must say i have found lots of balls in that little are of trees. Try aiming left and drawing the ball in if you hit it into the brook often.

Design and condition:

Course in excellent condition, although I have heard it does get very hard and cracked in the summer. Plenty of sand in bunkers. Played off winter tees, which were fine (certainly better than some I have used) and all greens were in play are in good condition.

Playability:

Actually not bad ! I hadn't played here for a couple of years and is probably one of the best of the few 9 hole courses around. The 6th is a very good hole, dogleg right. I would echo the previous review - the 3rd is a filler.

Facilities and welcome:

Facilities are not one of Perivale's strong points ! No bar.... The guy in the pro shop is quality though and has been there for a fair few years.

In summary - a good Saturday morning 9 holes for £8-50, which is excellent value for money. What holds this course back is the louts/pikeys who occasionally get on.....

I have been playing golf for around one year now and have played Perivale many times as in my opinion its a great course for learning your craft. It's rare to lose a ball (well apart from the 6th where I seem to have filled the brook on the right with all my balls..) but still challenging with a good mix of holes for a 9 hole course. The course is also quite flat so its great to play here with my Father who can just about manage walking this course since his heart operation several years ago. The staff are friendly and the facilities are ok but there is no bar however they do a good toasted sausage sandwich! The greens unfortunately are not great but what do you expect for the good price that they charge.

Perivale looks as though it should be a mud bath in winter, being built on clay and near a river, but, in fairness, I have to say I was impressed with the condition of the course for the time of year. I admittedly played before the recent rains but my shoes and trousers were mud free after nine holes. Work has obviously been done on the course as there are a few more bunkers than are indicated on the card and all the par 3 holes now require a golf shot, rather than a skitter along the ground, to find the green. The best short hole to me is the 5th. The tee shot has to carry a diagonal ridge or it will be deflected well off line and the green is protected by mounds and hollows. The only hole that has nothing going for it is the short par 4 third. It is squeezed in and really just makes up the numbers.

Bunkers litter the long ninth, reachable in two downwind I would imagine, at least off the forward tee, but plenty of sand to make you consider your options. I would imagine the 6th, the hole with river left, ditch right and no more than 35 yards between green high, wouldn't be too intimidating first time out but once you realise how little margin for error there really is a well struck, straight shot to the green will become a rarity. Vegitation blocks your view of the right side of this hole from the tee. It would be better if it didn't, I think.

Fairly basic clubhouse, pro shop, catering etc. but everyone very friendly and pleasant. £7.20 for nine holes represents reasonable value. Nine hole course not to be dismissed too lightly.

Haven't played here for a year and was mighty impressed. The course is generally in much better condition and greens are very well kept. Still superb value, very friendly staff and some of the holes are still as tough as you'll get, especially that dastardly 6th with an ever narrowing fairway and streams on either side.

This course is where i basically learnt to play golf, and i always find myself going back to it every now and then. It is a great course for learning the game, but i doubt that serious golfers would like it as it is a council run course and it not the best in the area, but is always worth a go for the price. The course is pretty straight forward, only the 6th, par4 to worry about, water on both left and right, remains to this day one of the most annoying holes i have ever played, as i have lost a few balls over the years. It also has a good practice area consisting of a putting/chipping green and a small driving area where you can have lessons. I would recomend this course to anyone really, just looking to start the game or just casuly playing. However try to get in early on weekends as it can get very buisy

I learnt to play golf here and have a soft spot for it. Its a good beginners or practice course with only one truly challenging hole, the Par 4 6th.

A word of warning- this course gets very very busy on a warm weekend.

Built in the corner of a public park abutting the Brent river, Perivale is mainly flat featureless and a bit scrubby. But then you get to the sixth, A slight dog leg right with the brent on the left and a stream on the right the fairway narrowing all the time. A par fore which only the big hitters will get to its no wonder that peater alis listed it in his book of the hundred toughst holes in england.

I find Perivale Park an excellent course on which to practice. It is cheap, just the nine holes but par 34. The local council have been spending money on improving drainage and adding bunkering, and this work continues. The par-4 6th is an interesting hole (one side is the River Brent, the other side OOB over a ditch) and not to be sniffed at, and the 536-yard par-5 last is not exactly a walk-over. Not many courses were open all winter in 2001/02, but I think Perivale Park was closed just once when I wanted to play. Proximity to the A40 makes it an ideal sunrise/sunset half round during the working week in the late spring and through the summer for those who work in the west of London.

Both of the previous comments left here are true to some extent. If you want unpretentious golf then you will be welcomed but if you are used to playing proper courses you could get annoyed with the poorly maintained fairways and people nursing around with two clubs and one ball which they will hunt for endlessly. That's not meant in a nasty way, just that this is the lower end of the golfing spectrum. You get what you pay for!

This course is not one for the serious golfer. When I played it (attracted by the price) I soon realised why it was so cheap. It is a council run course and it shows. It is poorly maintained and one has to content with part time golfers who carry a few loose clubs around the course with them without any knowledge of golfing etiquette.

Very basic and unpretentious council run 9 hole course. Fairly short length and wide fairways make this course ideal for beginners. Beware of the 6th hole which is a long challenging par 4 with all sorts of hazards. Also the long par 5 9th. Apart from these 2 holes the course is short and straightforward. If you don't want to worry about handicap certs, wearing spikes, right trousers etc, come here. Very friendly, down to earth staff and golfers.
