'Much improved interesting course and good value'

Design and condition:

Good design with some really interesting holes. For example very down hill par three 4th,Par 5 6th with large pond infront, right and back of green and par 3 8th over water onto upturned saucer green. Most holes have some point of interest and greens are small and undulating. Course condition was largely good (except for two GUR bunkers)with fairways and tees presented well and greens okay for time of year (look like they will be really good in a few weeks). Course was dry despite heavy rain the week before we played - course used to be very wet but have been told that they have put miles of pipes in to solve the issue.

Playability:

Offers a very playable test for all levels of golfer and looks like a real challenge off the back tees. Beware of ditch on 15th, it is easily driveable off the tee, and look out for water on left of green, which you can't see if you lay up well short of the ditch. There is also a ditch on the 5th which is driveable.

Facilities and welcome:

Nice entrance to club through electric gates (if you like that sort of thing)Good changing rooms with lockers and friendly spike bar.Very good basic food and drink at very reasonable (cheap)prices eg Chilli with rice £3.75. Large function room for big societies/events and good/private members area. Pro shop fairly limited but you can get the basics. Welcome was polite and warm and staff/members were all friendly. Good practice putting green but currently no long game practice facilities(Understand that new driving range/academy is planned along with an on site hotel)Overall a very enjoyable day out.

Played on 16/5/2007. We were made very welcome and other players/staff were helpful and friendly. The course was in very good condition and has some good challenges. No booking system but were told that no competitions were due and we arrived at 9:30 and were playing by 10. Slightly expensive at £20 but all in all an enjoyable round.

No booking facility available. We were told just to turn up. Arrived at 9.00am, and were told we could not tee off until noon, because a competition was in progress. This information was not provided when we asked for booking details. Staff were not in the least bit friendly or helpful. Will not be visiting again.

Played again after my more positive experience but this time it started raining and within 20 minutes the greens were flooded. Previous comments on the wet state of affairs were right - a summer only course and even then only when it is dry.

After the first nine most golfers came off, but the course manager appeared happy to continue to take the money and potentially damage the course - there were no signs of greenkeepers. I hope the owner knows how his course is getting damaged this way.

My £40 for the round - although there was a 2 for 1 offer took a lot to get them to provide a credit note. The manager on duty appeared more interested in the party that was being organised in the club house.

Note that visitors can only play after 2pm on Saturday.

Played here about two years ago and the comments of previous reviewers rang true. Decided to give it another go this August.

Initial impressions have improved, although the car park still looks like a building site. The course was dry and in good condition, but talking to a local suggests that in the winter the clay soil causes it to be very wet. The wind was strong and this is apparently par for the course. Not a big issue per se, since most of the holes played with or against the prevailing wind.

Overall a pleasant experience for £25 mid week. Especially liked some of the short holes. Still a little barren around the edges as the course matures and some of the greens play like up turned saucers.

I played Purley Chase on July 26th 2005.The course is in brilliant condition at the moment and the greens are just like playing Augusta National.Undulating, big swings, and very fast it is a challenging course to say the least. All the staff were totally helpful.

The course is very interesting with some well shaped and undulating greens. Unfortunately the course was very wet and the fairways were not in play and all shots were made from out of the rough where your ball landed or on the edge of the fairway if you were lucky enough to hit them. The greens were still very quick though and reseptive. Several well placed water hazards make approach shots to the greens interesting. Definately a Summer Course which I will visit again in 5 or 6 months time.

Played Purley Chase on 8th March 2003 and was not impressed. Having read the other reports dating back over 12 months, it seems that very little progress has been made in developing the course which was in a terrible condition.

The heavy rain has turned this course into a mud bath so I was surprised that the course was even open. The course resembles a construction site and I can't imagine it being enjoyable to play for at least another 12 months, not that I'll be rushing back to check.

The course lacked character and wasn't able to present any real challenge even with the water features didn't really come in to play.

Atherstone GC down the road looks like a much better prospect.

Played a society day out with Midland Red on 28th August. The weather was sunny and the course was in very good condition. I feel they did over water the greens and swamped the practice putting area. The greens overall were in very good condition, very challenging, though they did lack consistency in the speeds. The bunkers could do with fluffing up at the start of each day - bit on the hard side. The fairways and teeing areas are in top condition with precise hole overview maps on each tee which stipulates all the requirements needed. The construction/redevelopment of the course is still going ahead with the odd lorry causing a sand storm on its route through the course, I was also informed by the bar staff a new fitness complex with pool is soon to be built on site, starting in about 12 months. Overall I would recommend this course to anyone, the overall facilities were excellent with good changing room/locker/showers on site.

Just a following note having played the course again on 3rd mar 2002 9 months later there seems to be no improvement in the course with rubble tracks going across fairways still and piles of rubble getting a layer of turf putting over it ( I wouldn't want to take a divot having seen the rocks and slabs underneath). Anyway I thought I would just warn you that this is not a course to play after rain (drizzle) as it was a complete mud bath even down the fairway. Although all the green are now open.

Having played the course on 23rd june 2001 I found the course to be good condition except that some idiot had vandalised 7 of the greens and it was playing on temps(probably won't be ready for a month or so) and that there was a few dirt tracks on the fairways for the lorries that are working on the course.

The course has some interesting holes and the greens are also worth a note not just your boring flat greens that I've played on most courses.

I found this to be an interesting course - fairly undulating with water in play at a number of holes (high handicappers beware). Very enjoyable, good value for money and well worth a visit. I played after a wet spell and parts of the course were a bit sloppy.
