Rickmansworth Public Golf Course Player Reports
Jamie Waller (England) 15/07/08
I moved to Rickmansworth recently and thought I would try the local course. Thought it would be a walk over at par 65. But this is a tricky course, hilly and tight. I have now played it for more than a year and really like it.
The greens are subtle and deceptive especially No 7. Very enjoyable. The 1st is 2 clubs more as the green is so high above you. The 3rd which is SI 1 starts very high up and you need a long straight drive and the second shot is blind over a crest to the green a great hole. No 5 is a hit or mis par 3 with the green on top of a very sllep slope and a two tiered green, SI 17! The 6th which is a short par 4 is made hard as the green is tucked behind the trees on the left. No 7 is a very tight par 3 and the green light so quick with everything coming back at you. 8 & 9 are blind par 4s with tricky approaches.
The back nine starts with a longish par 3 where the prevailing wind seems to always be in your face, this continues on the back 9. 10 is tight with a really tricky green which always gets away from you. The next is a 212 yard par 3 blind over two chestnut trees amazingly hard SI 2. You get relief on the next which is an easy par 3 but starts high up with a two tiered green. the 14th has the most amazing fairway which slopes dramatically from left to right, the only way to keep it on the fairway is to hit it onto the rough on the left and hope it kicks a little right, the appraoch shot here is tight and tough with the green above you. The 15th has to be the signature hole 189 yard par 3, get your driver out! A thin green is perched above you and its almost impossible to stop you ball on the green.
Just when you think that the agony is over the 16th is a blind par 4 with trouble down the right in the disguise of a dell and everything rolls that way, your approach should always be one more club. The final hole is tight off the tee with only the pin to aim at for your second as you cannot see the green from the contours of the land.
They have grown the rough to hay in place to punish the errant shots which makes it more important to hit straight.
Come off this course playing to your handicap is a good round, proper thinking mans course.
Off the course the changing rooms and facilities are basic but the food is good. At only £19.50 at weekends this is value for money.

This a really good little course and was in excellent condition all summer - I think it was being looked after by the greenstaff from it's notable neighbour, Moor Park.
A few notable holes - the par 4 3rd is a great looking hole from an elevated tee, the 12th is a blind 200+ yard (215ish?) tee shot and the 15th is par 3 not for the faint hearted with the geen about 30 foot above you.

Tricky Ricky as the locals affectionaly call it and not without reason but a great leveler. The first time I played this course I just missed breaking 100 for the first time ever but even recording a Dalmation (101) raised a few eyebrows.
The first hole Par 3, gives you an indication of what this place is all about, 130+ yards with a green some 40 foot above tee level and from there on that describes the course.
Being I am informed the ex Ladies course from next doors exclusive Moor Park Golf club the fairways and greens have excelent pedigree and are in good condition.
This is a course a novice like me can still give and old hand a game and very enjoyable. Highly recomended.

a good course that can offer a challenge or two to most golfers! the fairways are in good condition and the greens are superb. the beginer mat struggle on some of the greens. good to learn the game on but still offers a good day to the more advanced golfers. evryone is friendly but be prepared to wait on the tee's.

I played this course at the weekend with others who had previously played it and spoke highly of it. Unfortunately I was not impressed. The fairways were OK but the greens were dismal, especially the mud bath of the 17th. Lumps and bumps all over the place. But, we are just coming out of winter and people say it's much better in the summer. Apart from that it's quite a nice course with nice views and reasonably dry despite recent bad weather.

What can i say? Probably the most interesting course in this part of greater london. Forget the yardage of the whole course, you still be struggling to put a decent score in. Unbelievable holes, although the holes do change so i cant name them but the cheeky par 1, the par 3 hole with the 60 foot bank, hole 15 which is probably the hardest par 3 i have played and the excellent and challenging greens all conjures up a very satisfying round. All golfers will enjoy this whatever your handicap.
