Royston Golf Club Player Reports

Played on a beautiful summer's day without a great deal of wind. For a first time visitor I found the course very enjoyable and excellent value at £30.00 for two with a 2-for-1 voucher.

Course was in good condition. Greens were firm but receptive, true and reasonably fast. Rough was long, but wispy enough to allow balls to be found, and shots to be played.

Although, fairly hilly (not sure which hill was 'cardiac' as more than one got my pulse throbbing), generally the par 4s played short - expect to be hitting a wedge to 8 iron fairly often for second shot. Two long par 3s at about 225 yards. Particularly, liked the 10th down the valley.

Overall, found the course a fun and fairly serious test. Would be very hard in more of a wind. Rugby club appears to have a bar which is far more convenient to 18th green than actual clubhouse.

I've played Royston a number of times as a guest of a member, and always had a thouroughly enjoyable round. Is much better since the new hole was added on the front nine and the ridiculously short par 3 removed.

Provides a good varying test of golf, but if you don't like playing in the wind, I wouldn't recommend it!

Is almost always open... and drains very well, so is a good bet for a winter round.

Royston is a great test of golf !

The rough can be wild - it pays to stay on the fairway.

There are some tough slopes, including 'cardiac hill' towards the end.

If u want a good challenge, then this is DEF. a course for you !!

The course is reasonably hilly and exposed, and forms part of a nature reserve. The course rarely suffers from the weather - it doesn't get water logged or dry. The rough is not allowed to be cut in many places so can grow to 2ft in the summer! Greens are quick, many of which are protected by links-style pot bunkers or steep drops. On a clear day the views are excellent, and if not too windy, it is a very pleasant round. The only downside is that the club house is a ten minute walk from the course, so most people drive & park at the rugby club next to the 1st tee.
