I had the pleasure of playing Selby in mid June and despite the weather being very wet the course was in excellent condition. The greens were very true and fast. The course was a challenge made even harder by pot bunkers that guarded some greens. The people were freindly and the club house was pleasant. There were also fantastic practise facilities that included a driving range and a huge practise green.

I had the pleasure of playing this course as a guest on a perfect autumnal day in October 2004. The course was in pristine condition. In particular the greens, well manicured and often difficult to read, and most of them very well guarded. It is the latter aspect that makes this course such a tough but enjoyable golfing challenge. In addition many of the tee shots leave no room for error. A few examples being the 1st and all of the par 3's. There are many memorable holes. My favourite being the par 5 18th. A good tee shot followed by a good second, does the soul no good when you see the pot bunkers in front of this green, which in turn is one of the toughest finishes imaginable. (i was happy to take a 6!) A superb clubhouse, friendly staff and members. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Selby Golf Club has gone through some changes in the past few years but has not lost any of it's original character. For a straight hitter of the ball the course does not prove to be enormously difficult but a solid short game is required to score well. The changes in the course come mostly in the first few holes, whereas the first used to be a testing par five, it has been shortened to a par four with a tricky green, well protected. The second used to be a downhill par three, deceptively difficult. The second is now a long par five which benefits the people who can gain great distance on their shots. Everytime I have played Selby more often than not I have struggled in the first few holes. It takes time to settle into the course, if you do score well in the first few holes and manage to hold your game together then you should be in for a good round. Good scoring can be had once you get into the second third of the course with medium length holes which the shorter of hitters can still score well on. Iron play off the tees on these holes can be a benefit as it is wiser to go for accuracy over length. All the greens are well protected but low hitters who like to run the ball into the green can find a pathway through the trouble. Once into the final third of your round there are still obstacles that can ruin a potential good score. A straight five hundred yarder par five requires accuracy as thick(and very prickly, believe me!) gorse grows on both sides of the fairway, the green isn't visible until you get within twenty five yards away from it making you curious as to where your ball has actually ended up. The last remaining holes just need to be played sensibly - don't try to do something spectacular as with all courses Selby can punish and hit you where it hurts! The last hole is a nice, slight dog leg par five. The clubhouse is a welcome sight walking up the last fairway(as drinks aren't too far away). The last green is probably the trickiest one of the lot so be careful.
I have had many an enjoyable round of golf at Selby and I'm sure you will to.

selby is like woodhall spa's little brother, it is fairly flat but makes good use of the contours it has with quite a few greens having an amphetheter mounding surrounding them
the bunkers are not qiute as deep as woodhall but still need a good strike to get them up in the air and out
i cant pick 1 hole that paticular stands out they are all good in there own way and good course management is requireed to put together a good score we played it on a wet day but the greens where all in play and run true if you can read themany breaks they have
i reccomend this course to you nowing you wil enjoy it

An excellent mature course that is particularly challenging when the wind gets up, the greens are very quick and well kept. Some constructional changes are being made to the course at the moment but disruption is minimal. Facilities are very good both in the clubhouse and on the course.
