Shaw Hill Hotel Golf and Country Club Player Reports

As I’ve been working in the North West I have been staying at the Shaw Hill Golf and Country clubs (most weeks for several months now!) and so thought I would add some thoughts on the club.

For those who care to read no further I’ll start with excellent!

The course is fantastic! Despite suffering a little with the wet weather (gets a little boggy) it has always been in great condition. The fairways have an almost unique ‘moss’ type grass that is like carpet to play off and the greens too are in great condition. The courses great strength is the variety it gives! Whilst it is parkland, it is set in a valley with one edge going into the trees quite substantially where it plays like a forest course for a few holes. There are plenty of elevation changes, bunkers, streams, lakes, you name it you will not be bored! No two holes are that much alike! My only critical comment on it’s layout would be that the greens, whilst in great condition and plenty with several tiers, are fairly flat where a little more rolling undulation would have topped things off perfectly!

What are the star holes… probably 5-7 then 10-16… pretty much all of them. I’ve picked these as they play more in the trees which frame the fairways beautifully. 8 is the toughest beyond all doubt as it is a long par 4 which unless you can hit a controlled fade with a club that will get you 220yrds, you won’t even have the option of going for the green in two, and as it is a small green protected by water at the front, even then it would be a tough call. I would bet money that a 5 would win 9 times out of 10 in matchplay!

Perhaps a bonus to the course (also a factor of the large number of weekday societies) is that the rough is actually very well cut down. This keeps the course friendly for higher handicappers as well, where as if they chose to grow it up and tighten the fairways it could be really tough!

As for the club house it’s a lovely Georgian manor house. The pro shop is well equipped and the restaurant is superb (but expect restaurant rather than golf bar prices). Everyone I have met here has been friendly and I would well recommend it. They take 2 for 1 vouchers using which it is a bargain!

Played the course for the first time last week.

Overall very impressed. A warm welcome from staff and starter who ensured our group had everything we needed.

The first couple of holes "ease you in" to a course that played a lot longer than I expected. When you see a number of par 5s on a card you go fancying your chances but with bunkers and water well placed, unless you're in position off the tee there is little or no option very often but to lay up with your second.

Tee beds were in good nick, fairways terrific and the greens were lightening fast and true. Rough was tough to get out off despite not appearing to be that thick or penalising at first glance. Both right and left dog legs pepper the course, a refreshing challenge.

I came off the course having played just about every club in the bag, a rarity nowadays and usually a sure fire sign that you've visited a good testing track.

Pro shop was adequate, though I think with a bit of thought on their part they could make better use of the space available to them - it all just seemed a bit "thrown together". Catering and service was very good indeed.

I would have no hesitation in recommending a visit to Shaw Hill to anyone.

Played the course 18-5-07 its the second time i have played here and the second time the course has beat me. Its a challenging course especially when the wind gets up.

The course was in first class condition and the greens were quick and true.

The par 5,s are cracking holes with the 4th 9th and 17th especially testing.

The facilities are first class and we to found the members friendly .

The food and service were also excellent, definatly a course to return to.

Played the course 23rd March 2007. Cannot fault the course, in immaculate condition and was a sound challenge for all golfers. The reception and welcome provided by staff particularly Bernard was first class. I would not hesitate returning here in the future an opinion echoed by the rest of our small society. food and drinks good value in the bar and also found the members friendly and accommodating.

played twice this year... a real bargain with 2for1 . the staff in the pro shop are the best ive come across. no arseyness they make you welcome and really try to be helpful, most clubs are a bit dismissive of visitors and find them a hindrance or a necessary evil, here it s totally the opposite, course was suffering from the poor weather as are they all , but was ok considering.

the clubhouse is first class and we even had a game of snooker with our pint.

top venue....will return often
