'Young P' (England) 27/05/07

This is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde layout. The opening is very average at best – and the 2nd and 3rd holes particularly uninspiring, being more redolent of one of those newly-converted farmer's fields that typifies many new courses built in the '80s and '90s.

However, things start to get moving at the long par 4 uphill SI 1 5th. The course then enters more of a traditional parkland section framed by some lovely mature firs, with 8 and 9 being reminiscent of the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion, perched on the vertiginous edge of the property, with severe punishment for anything off line. The 9th (192 yds off the whites) is a memorable – and very difficult – par 3 where you really don't want to be short or left and a par would be gratefully received by any standard of player.

A couple more gentle parkland holes then follow before you cross the road and tackle the most picturesque and interesting section. The course guide (which, incidentally, contains grammar which would guarantee a failure in English at the famous local school) states that "part of the original course was designed by James Braid" – and my betting is that it included holes 12-18. Those familiar with some of Braid's more 'eccentric' creations like Perranporth and Boat of Garten will recognise echoes of those memorable courses here, with marker posts, narrow fairways, sloping lies and severe topography.

We actually started from the 12th which I wouldn't particularly recommend doing as not only do you go straight into the tightest section of the course, but it also means 11 of your first 12 holes are par 4s, before finishing 5,3,5,3,4,5.

Overall, there are some good holes here (and a couple of very good ones) plus the pro is a nice bloke, but there are also some poor holes, the greens were inconsistent the layout just doesn't feel coherent.

As with just about any course, I'm pleased I've been round it once - but this won't be on my 'must play' list.

I visited this course whilst on a holiday in the local area. I have been to Sherborne before which is in a beautiful area and the town is worth a visit. With these things in mind I felt that the course should be of a good standard. Unfortunately I was very wrong. On initial approach the layout and views offer a great deal of promise. However having hit my ball down the 1st I was both suprised and very disappointed to find that the fairway was like a badly made patchwork quilt. The grass was of varying lengths and was so poorly maintained that it was hard to differentiate between the fairway and the 1st cut of rough. Then I reached the green. This was absent of any level of grass and may have been why it was covered in grass seed. It also looked like the club were on a water ban as the greens looked like they had not seen any for sometime. As can be expected this did not bode well for a good round. The layout on the front eight holes was then very straight and bland with things only improving on the ninth. To make matters worse I was behind a four-ball group who not only failed to allow me through(there choice, I know the regulations)but who also blanked me when I said good-day to them. As they were all obviously club members this did not exactly endear me to them or the club. I persevered with the round, after all I had paid for it, and did find the back nine more challenging, interesting and scenic. Overall I wish I had played at another club, possibly Yeovil, and saved my money and time. Not one I will be recommending to anyone visiting the area.

I think Sherborne Golf course is one of the best golf courses I have ever played. It can Test peoples knowledge of golf it also benefits a great range of facilities. I think the Pro Is one of the nicest one I have ever met.

While not the longest or most strenuous course in the region, Sherborne neverthless lprovides a stiff test of golf, with a fine mixture of terrain and distance. The fairways and greens are always in excellent conditions, helped by the topography of the location. The club provides good value meals through the year (not Mondays), and boasts a comfortable clubhouse and friendly members and staff.
