Shipley Golf Club Player Reports

Another half term week has passed and true to form the British weather did not disappoint. A cloudy wet day on the soaked Northcliffe course was followed by gales on Wednesday at Willow Valley and then an absolutely fabulous sunny and tranquil afternoon at Shipley. 3 good courses in 4 days can't be bad.

Shipley was just stunning. Located in a wide valley bottom it was immaculately conditioned and was amazingly firm and dry given the soaking earlier in the week. There were a number of excellent holes but visually the par 3 7th is without doubt the best with an elevated tee and the river running round the back. The lad advised us that it has a reverse slope Mackenzie green (or something like that) to impress our more senior players. Shame he was the only one to 3 putt...knowledge is not always a good thing! However he had the last laugh beating us all comfortably well before the end.

Would definitely go back again and again but for the price being a bit out of our league....but then you have to pay for quality and this did not disappoint.

Just one of several fine courses in this area of West Yorkshire, Shipley manages to delight, surprise and occasionally frustrate some players. Because some of the tees and greens are close to one another, it's a good idea to get a course chart from the friendly pro before teeing-off.

There are five par fives and six par threes - and several greens are elevated, punishing those who overclub and go down the back or sides. It's a course where sensible club selection is rewarded and big hitters can find trouble.

When our society played (June 2003) it was in immaculate condition and the greens were true - if tricky. In an age when many courses have opted for the corporate image, here is one with old-fashioned golfing values and style.

Wow !! What a great course. I played this golf on 29/05/03 and found the complete course to be in perfect condition, the best i have played in Yorkshire. The imaginative course design means every hole is unique and the back to back par 5's are a masterpiece. Set in very peaceful surroundings with beutiful foliage and mature tree's makes Shipley a very enjoyable course. It is difficult to single out one special hole as every hole has something to remember, although the short down hill par 3 towards the river with its large Mcenzie green is superb. I played with a wide range of H/Cap abilities from 6 - 28 and every player admitted they have never played a better course in the local area. I recommend this pristine course should be tried by everybody. The catering facilites were also 5 star and all players are made to feel welcome.

This must be the best course in the area with 17 interesting and testing holes set in pretty countryside. The 2nd and 7th are especially tricky. However may I suggest that the 8th is dug up and transplanted at Royal Riddlesden where it most certainly belongs. The professional is very freindly.
