I played Shirland with my Dad and Brother both 28 handicappers (I'm off a ropey 16) and we had a great day. The weather was terrible and had been for 3 days. The course was in good nick and played well. It is a testing track with some very interesting holes!

The welcome from the staff in the pro shop was superb and was equalled in the bar! Manager Andrew seems a top bloke. Food was good and with a driving range and refurb planned, it can only get better.

Visited the course yesterday 31/05/08 with society ( 28 members). Really enjoyed the day, full package bacon roll, round of golf and meal afterwards. The course was a real delight, extremely picturesque and a good challange, with its variety of dog legs, ditches, raised greens and challenging distances; definately a course where you have to think your way round. Only criticism was greens were a little "wooly" and required more force than the norm to prevent stopping short.

Having said that the course generally was in excellent condition, good signage from green to next tee prevented any guessing of directions. The course may be viewed as a little hilly for some, so power caddies a benefit.

The club house and staff were very welcoming and the facilities on par with the course.

Well worth a visit

Visited the course at christmas with my brother and son and on arrival was made most welcome, and not being from the area, this immediately put us at ease. The course itself was quite challenging and the greens must have improved considerably going by other comments, the fairways were unsaturated and no winter greens were in use, excellent considering this was December! Also a mention to how little a round cost with soup and a roll thrown in, and my nine year old son was allowed to play for free, great value.

Was planning to visit other courses in the area but was happy to return 3 more times to try and improve my score.

A big thanks to the staff who were great!

As a new member i rate shirland as the most challenging and scenic course in the area. All the staff have a first class attiutude to customer service. Yes the greens could be improved however the correct investment of time and of course money will put this right sooner rather than later if this was not this case i certainly wouldnt have spent the money on my first membership to a golf course.

We played Shirland Sunday 20th May 2007 with our Society, I agree with many of the other comments. However since booking there's been a change of ownership, 6 weeks I believe. What I can say is that the welcome and organisation in the pro shop and catering was first class, brilliant however the course is in desparate need of investment and some TLC. The faiways were covered in daisys, greens were slow, bobbly and patchy. Unfortunately we were told some of the greens have been subject to vandalism. Overall though the day was superb the course is very interesting and makes you think about each shot, some narrow fairways, the catering, bar and pro shop was superbly run. I just hope that the new owners invest and get the course sorted, this would influence me in booking another society day there.

I played this course on Sunday 1st October 2006 and have to say that the course was in terrible condition. The tee's were abysmal, the fairways boggy and not in a generally good state of repair. This brings me on to the greens. Well there is certainly something to be said there. The greens are not green but rather a vast shade of browns. Wet - no soaked, sank into them when standing. Unkept. Putted into a line of someone else's footprint to watch my ball shoot of at a 90 degree angle. Standing water and in a shocking state of repair. We played this course last year as part of our society and thought it was OK and opted to return. We were cancelled on in late April as the course was closed due to being waterlogged and as far as I am concerned the course should still be shut now. We won't be returning to play this course again. One final thing to note the lady who runs the bar and restaurant at the club is doing a fantastic job. As well as having to put up with everyone moaning about the course (even though she only franchises the facilities) the food was superb.
