Played 7 holes here midweek October 07 (£20 each using a 2 FORE 1 voucher).

Disappointing all round.

On arrival we saw that the 1st hole was busy but the pro assured us that it was only a few groups & play would be at quick pace. However, what became apparent fairly quickly was that the whole course was packed .There were players on every hole that we could see. After waiting on every shot & crawling at a snails pace for 7 holes we decided to call it a day as we weren't enjoying it & it was clear that it was going to proceed in this manner until the end.

Taking into account, as the weather was good, that these things happen from time to time we then headed back to the pro shop to try to get a partial refund intending then to head off with a shrug of our shoulders. However,we were told that this wasn't club policy & were offered complimentary rounds instead which we didn't want as, firstly,we'd had a two & a half hour round trip to get there & were unlikely to be coming back to the area in the near future, secondly,we could have a lengthy drive back and encounter a similar type scenario & lastly ,because we didn't really want to come back as we hadn't enjoyed it.The club wouldn't budge & at one point we were informed that we'd had a good deal playing 7 holes for the £20 2FORE1 rate as their normal green fees were much higher!

Even though this might sound like sour grapes ,the other disappointment was the course. From the holes we played & the others we could see it wasn't anything more than a fairly ordinary parkland course & nowhere near as good as i was expecting. The first couple of holes were tight & restricting & then the course opened out into some fairly uninspiring open holes.Even the par 3 7th, which i'd read about, was no more than decent.

The greens were very good & the fairways good but a bit mud-patchy in places.

We left here feeling miffed off.

A 'Hidden Gem', to coin a phrase. Right in the middle of Shirley / Croydon, an unexpected pleasure. Old style club, with friendly members and staff that made a fuss of us. Course was in fine condition despite recent rain, which only served to add some length to the course.

Plenty of OB, as you would expect with houses and school bordering course, but nothing silly. Par 3s are varied and 7th is a cracker!

Recommend to any handicap - although in height of dry summer would play short.

Shirley park may not be noted as one of the top courses in this part of world, but you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much enjoyment and pleasure you'll experience while playing it. It has a great starting hole if not one of the best starting holes in golf you can find in the South East. It's all up hill and measures well over 400 yards and plays longer, with the wind either in your face or across you from either right or left. Out of bounds all the way up the right hand side this applies to you when playing this hole and the dog leg second hole as well. The greens at shirley park over the last few years are up there with the very best in this part of Surrey and can be very tricky to read. You also have fantastic views looking back into and across London while playing the top of the course the sixth and eight holes. Holes 6 through to 11 are what you could discribe as playing your own little Amen corner, and the wind direction always confusses you which makes your club selection difficult even if you've played the course before. You have one of the most challenging in golf in the par 3 seventh hole you'll ever want to play. Trust me no room for weak hearts here. After playing this hole alone you'll want to come back for more. It's certainly a very welcoming place to visit. All the Staff are helpful and friendly and you'll feel welcomed. The Members are also friendly and very proud to show off their course to you and share the experience of playing it with you. All there is left to say is that this is a little hidden treasure, one you should try and get along to and play. Be ready to re-load when playing one of the many feature holes the seventh, and take an extra club when playing the 3rd. But most of all I promise you you'll enjoy the experience.

Good Greens, well maintained tees and fairways and a very pleasant professional make this a very nice club indeed. The geen on the first hole is very long and 3 tiered so make sure you take enough club to get on the correct tier. Aim slightly left of the marker post on the 2nd hole since it dog legs right. The next few are staright forward enough until the 7th which is one of the best par 3's around - left of the green is dead so do not go there. The 9th is a cracking dog-leg par 5 which should be played in a cautious manor. Again aim slightly left of the marker on the 11th since all of the trouble is down the right hand side. The 15th is a glorious downhill dog leg par 4. The 16th looks easy on the card but the fairway has loads of bunkers and the green is very small. The 17th was the only disappointing hole on the course - Long par 3. The 18th is a super finishing hole - Downhill Par 5 with water on the right and a massive tree on the left. Overall I would recommend a visit.

The first nine is very well laid out with variety on every hole. I had to use almost every club in my bag. To me thats sign of a well designed course. It uses the contours of the land very well. Most fairways are tight. Had to resist the urge to blast the ball. My favourite are the par threes. Second nine disappoints compared to the first. One of the best courses I have played in Croydon.

The Par 3`s stand out on this excellent course which was in good condition from start to finish.

Quite forgiving on the long holes with wide fairways and minimal heavy rough although it still needs treating with respect.Have also had some lessons with the Pro there Wraif Grant who was excellent.
