Being from merseyside i"ve played many of the top course"s in the area [Formby, West Lancs, Southport and Ainsdale ect, all i can say is for about half the green fee price of the fore named track"s this course is superb value, although a little bit of the beaten track, its well worth the time and effort to visit,if you enjoy links golf this is a must.

The most fun I have ever had on a golf course. I have now played Silloth 5 times and it gets better and better every time. From the very back tees (blue I think), it is a monster. It is very difficult to single out any holes for special mention as there are so many that are classics. However playing from the back tees on the 5th and 13th is amazing. And the 9th is a classic par 3 which in my humble opinion is only bettered by the 13th at Muirfield and equalled by the 2nd/6th at Dornoch. Apart from some of the Open Championship courses, only Dornoch betters Silloth and that is only just. However, if you are talking about value for money, then Silloth is the best in the UK. You need your A game here. And the food in the clubhouse is brilliant.

We arrived at the course on the 30th April 2007 and had booked tee times for 9:30 and 9:40 on a Monday morning. The course we were told by the club pro is usually quiet on Monday's - which it was. Believe what has already been said about this course, everthing from the tees, greens, bunkers, fairways etc, to the clubhouse is first class. I believe that if this course was a shade longer then it would surely have hosted an Open Championship by now, it already is used for the qualifiers and it's easy to see why. The only downside on the day was that there weren't any course planners available due to supply reasons. If your ever lucky enough to play this great course then I would highly recommend that you get one before you play because there are quite a number of blind holes to navigate but nonetheless this didn't spoil our enjoyment. One of my party has played a number of Open venues including Royal Birkdale and he rated this course better than that, so for £45 this represents great value for money. Can't wait to go back again and play this gem of a course.

it's the only golf course that has taken my breath away on seeing the first hole, like walking into battle not knowing what lies ahead, but every hole has its own character and wherever you look there are fantastic views.do not go off line as the heather and sea grass will chew you up and spit you out.can't wait to go back.

Visited Silloth again on Friday 9th June 2006 on beautiful still day as part of a mini-break in Cumbria. Even in these conditions it was a great challenge.
There are no more superlatives to add to everything that has already been written about this course and the whole experience of a day there.
The only thing I would suggest is that a delegation from all the links clubs on the "Southport" coast should travel up to Silloth to see how visitors are made welcome and only pay a green fee of around £35 for the privilege!
Silloth-on-Solway.......unbeatable!

Man it tough!!
This is some course. It grabs you and shakes you about like a dog with a bone. Great layout and very good condition. Off line is a complete no no most the time. Play here it will not disappoint. Great welcome from the members too (its like they know what you're in for once your round begins!)
Great all round experience. A must play (even if just to see how you cope with a near no win battle !) Loved it

A fantastic course , the front nine is a very tough test, especially if the wind is blowing. If you miss a fairway you are in trouble!!! The back nine allows you to put a score together.
Well worth a trip to play especially as it is only £33, an absolute bargain. One of the best links courses you are likely to play. Go out of your way and enjoy!!!

Played last year and after recently playing Carnoustie (see comments), which was superb, realise just how good this course was. Never seen bunkers manicured so well, just don't go in! admire them from afar! the greens were so slick unfortunately I got a bit "yippy", my fault not theirs. Again as with all our outings it was probably the 5 am finish (after a 5pm start) in the bar that did for me anyway. All said this must be pound for pound the best course in the UK!

Played early June 2005. Fantastic greens and well worth a long journey to get there. Weather adds to the experience, the wind can be as unforgiving as the rough! However, love the place and will return again and again. The biggy event is 4th July when the qualifiers are played there. Stayed in a 3* excellent hotel in Skinburness, just down the road, which just made the whole experience great! Congratulations Silloth Golf Club!

Played the Silloth course in late May 2005, it was
a long drive but worth the time. That day was a 2
to 3 club wind, very picturesque golf course. The ninth hole was a great par 3 similar to the postage stamp. Great value for the money. The members were very friendly to us. I would go back
again.

Our Society played at Silloth, for the first time, in July 2004 and prior to our visit we had heard what a great course it was and an urban myth that the only reason they don’t have the Open here is because the town is too small to cope?
Despite being at a remote location, Silloth exceeded all of our expectations and made the 7:00 am start from Liverpool more than worth it.
There is no link to the Website here but the Club do have one if you do a search of your own.
I haven’t seen a course on this site with so much player feedback and I can’t add much more to what has already been said other than to agree that Silloth must rate in the top few courses in the UK. The greens were absolutely fantastic and the scenery (apart from the car park) would be hard to equal.
For the average Society like us and the casual visitor, Silloth is a must. One of the joys is that you pay a sensible green fee for the day (£32).…..probably less than half you would expect to pay at the self proclaimed “elite” links courses a bit further South. I can guarantee that Silloth would be the equal, at least, of any other Links course.
You are assured of a friendly reception from the Secretary, Staff and Members alike and this made for a most memorable day. The Secretary and Treasurer even took the trouble to arrange a suitable buggy for one of our lads to enable him to play.
If you ever get the chance to visit Silloth, don’t pass it up or be put off by the long drive as you won’t be disappointed. Once you have been, you will be desperate to return for more. We will be going back as soon as we possibly can!

I am a member of this fine golf club but (unfortunately) at the moment live in Birmingham because of work commitments. Having played dozens of courses in the Midlands and beyond I always look forward enormously to my visits to Silloth. It is difficult to explain how good this course is. In comparison to any courses I have played, none come close. In June they play the open qualifiers here, which will give perhaps an inkling of the quality of the course. The best (and worst) thing about Silloth is you can hit a perfect drive that'll bounce off the uneven hillocky fairway and put you in the rough! Some of the drives are blind as are some of the approach shots to the green- local knowledge is very very useful here. The greens themselves are always excellent and in the summer super fast and true. The other thing to mention is the excellent value for money both in terms of the green fees and the clubhouse facilities, not to mention the membership fee! I have family in the Midlands and they love to come up North to play with their friends on this amazing course.
Bobby Paterson (Scotland) 22/06/04
Fantastic course - rented two 3 bed caravans 1 mile away for just over £700 in July 2002 for 2 weeks - Solway Holiday Village which also has a nine hole course (of sorts) on site.
Bobby Paterson (Scotland) 22/06/04
The bit nobody seems to have mentioned - green fees are half-price if you tee-off after 5pm during the week - i.e. £16 for 18 holes in 2004 to play a course that's always in beautiful condition. I've parred most of the holes and typically lose 6-8 balls per round - hence not broken 100 yet...practice facility is also excellent
Brian Gardner (England) 23/04/04
I played this course on a very sunny day, unfortunately there was a howling gale coming off the sea which made it very difficult to keep the ball in play. This is a must-play course with a total links experience, the greens are very slick and not for the faint hearted.
I am already making plans to return.
Michael Gordon (Wales) 22/10/03
My mother lived in Silloth and when I was a lad I used to have a great time playing on the sand dunes and messing around in the sea. I was asked to go and join in with some freinds who played with the Juniors and it was my first introduction to Golf.
I'm now a member at Gleneagles, but Silloth is my spiritual golfing home. This is a very good course and is in excellent condition even after the dry summer. The fairways give a good clean lie and the greens are firm, true and quickish.
I played Silloth on 18th October 2003 and can report that it is a wonderful golfing experience. I'm sure you've all seen it listed in the top 50 courses in the UK. It's no accident that Silloth is so consistently highly rated by the glofing fraternity.
It takes around 30 to 45 minutes to get to Silloth from the M6, depending on which junction you use. It's a pleasant drive...so there's no excuses that it's a bit 'out of the way'. In fact the best things are worth the extra effort. I guarantee you'll be rewarded.

A MUST FOR EVERY GOLFER , CLASSIC LINKS COURSE WITH SOME VERY UNFORGIVEN ROUGH .THE GREENS ARE EXCELLENT 10 OUT OF 10 FOR THE GREEN KEEPERS . THIS COURSE WILL LAST IN YOUR MEMORY FOR A VERY LONG TIME . CLUB HOUSE IS VERY FRENDLY , WITH EXCELLENT CATERING ..
gordon mcgregor (england) 08/12/02
I am a young golfer and i have played twice at silloth. it is good for young people because it has a junior tee for kids who can't hit a ball consistently. now I tee off from the ladies tee and take on some of the challenging rough . not a pichmark on the greens . MUST BE PLAYED
tom meldrum (england ) 01/11/02
very good course with a good set up. tight fairways and punishing rough make it a challenging course, but it was throughly enjoyable, with great views.oh yeah and watch out for the par 5 thirteenth.
Mike Binns (British) 11/09/02
Abolutely awsome course. The condition is second to none. Well worth a the visit off the beaten track. Not the most friendly club however.
Paul Clayton (England) 25/07/02
Without doubt the best golf course I have ever played.
Tight fairways, punishing rough and superbly true and fast greens. Having paid serious money to pay the best Britain has to offer ( Belfry, Celtic Manor, etc.) this course puts them to shame not only in golfing terms but for value for money. We played the course in rain and a strongish breeze and thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather did not stop us admiring the beauty of a course that more people should have the pleasure of playing.
How I never lost a ball going round I will never know, although I must thank the ball finding qualities of my two playing partners. Must be played to be appreciated.
Jack Martin (England) 02/07/02
Silloth is a course i have fond memories of. But i would advise everyone not to play this course with a hangover. Not only is this the best golf course i have played but the most friendly. The greens are to die for and have less bumps than my beds at home. The bunkers are from a Stephen King novel and the fairways are like a large man with mumps after he has had a shave. But apart from that, the biggest compliment i can pay to silloth is that this belong on the Open list, people around the world should be able to see this course in all it's glory. And Tiger Woods would never win here when the wind is blowing, so it give us Brit's a chance to get back the claret jug.
So if you see this comment on this great course send the people in charge of booking the Open courses a letter telling them to get this on, before Tiger and the rest of his mates continue to take the jug over the pond!
andy ogden (england) 14/09/01
GO AND PLAY THIS COURSE.
Having spent the week on the Ayrshire coast, and travelling back home we chose Silloth as a finale to the trip.
And what a finale it was.
This is quiet simply the best links course i have payed in the UK. (including 4 of the open venues.!)
The views are amazing the rollowing track breath tacking and the heather and gorse punnishing.
This is golf at its best, get off line and generally it will cost you a half shot, (at best.)
My only critisism would be the greens, when I played they were just microtined and were as soft as parkland greens, not the firm fast greens you would normally expect from a links course.
Can you believe you can play this course for under £20 through the winter with the 2-fore-1 package.
GREAT COURSE GREAT CLUB HOUSE GREAT CATERING.... GO AND PLAY IT !!!
mark donnelly (usa) 11/08/01
Siloth is no lady! On my way to play the courses of Scotland (Carnoustie, St. Andrews, Turnburry, to name a few) we stopped in Siloth to play. Definitely the hardest course I played on my trip. Maybe the hardest I have ever played. I am a 9 handicap and went into double digits on one hole. Be ready for the wind and narrow fairways. An absolute must play! Do not pass up this course.
Dave Howie () 13/10/00
Played the course twice during w/c 9/10/00. Despite recent heavy rain, which had closed most other courses in the area, Silloth was in incredibly good condition with no water lying on the course. There is not a weak hole on the course and several exceptional holes.
This is one of the best courses I have played. Rececently I have played Machrihanish, Carnoustie & Irvine (Bogside)- all great golf courses. Silloth is a better and more interesting test of golf than any of them. At £26 per round it is also great value for money. The members and staff are very welcolming and you can have a super bar meal for a few pounds. This is one course I will play again.
NT () 13/06/00
Played Silloth on Solway in screaming weather. Almost unplayable (handicap 14) with gusting wind and rain in the face and high gorse waiting to swallow errant balls.
The outward nine, with high dunes along the Solway coast, is beautiful to behold, even in ghastly weather. A must play. Take along a stroke-saver if you are unfamiliar with the layout. It might save you some balls.
John Roper () 22/05/00
Without doubt the finest course this mere 18 hadicapper has ever played . An absolute must for every lover of the great game. Tough - I`ll say but very rewarding and gives you the feeling of being at ease with ones self.
I actually put my bag down in the rough to look for my ball - found my ball and then couldn`t find my bag - the gorse was so high.
MUST BE PLAYED ! - Take plenty of balls
() 30/08/99
Gives you the feeling of being the only one on the golf course as all the holes seem to be separated.
A great course and is an essential visit if in the area.
Richard Latham () 02/06/99
This is one of the finest courses I have had the pleasure of playing badly on. Even though my game was in ribbons the sheer beauty of the course made one want to carry on fighting. In the end I lost more golf balls than hit good shots but I can't wait to play it again.
Doug Stackhouse () 22/03/99
I learned the game of golf as a youth on this course, and I can honestly say in all my travels as a Brit now living in the USA I have never found a course as punishing, rewarding and downright challenging as the wild and windy links of Silloth.\r\nTo anyone planning to visit Britain during season,I can highly recommend a visit.\r\nP.S. make sure you bring a sandwedge!
Martin Toal () 31/12/97
Silloth is a classic links course with good views of the Solway and across to the south-west of Scotland. All the holes are separated from one another and are well defined from the tee. Usually in good condition and drains quickly after rain. The rough is punishing, so bring a few spare golf balls. A great course, well worth travelling to play. The key shot is a straight drive.
