Southwood Golf Course Player Reports
Nick Kaye (England) 14/04/06
A pleasant enough course that I try and play a couple of times a year.
It's not particularly long, so they keep the fairways pretty narrow (well, too narrow for me !). A couple of the fairways have whacking great trees in the middle of them, just to keep things interesting. The bunkers are well kept and the greens nice and true. I'm not convinced of some of the distances on the scorecard though !
They have a starter here (the only place I've ever played where they do) which keeps things nice and punctual.
The off-course facilities are good also.
£20 for a round at the weekend is good value for money.

I have played this course many times before and I have enjoyed every single round that I have played there. The facilities are up-to-scratch and the greens are well kept. The course provides a variety of bunker positions and the tee-off areas are in very good condition, although the they do not use grass tee-off areas in the winter which is not so good. In general the course is a very good course for a beginner / mid-range handicapper.

i am a mid handicap player and am grateful for the challenge this public course provides.a thumbs up to the ground staff as i played the course in the last week and now the last four holes have been changed to bring you home just outside the clubhouse.well done to all are involved with a truley proffesinal(public course).

I've played the course four times and enjoy it enough to make it a weekly event from now on. I play early on Saturday mornings so I don't see too much congestion although last week we were stuck behing a group with no regard for anyone else on the course, taking trollies onto greenaprons and stopping for a chat on the green before moving on etc.
The first hole is a challenge with distance and accuracy necessary off the tee if there's to be any chance of making par. The second, third and fourth are all interesting holes but the course opens out, and the golfer is invited to open his shoulders after crossing the road to the fifth. The course is very well maintained and has variety with undulations, bunkers, dog legs and a little water. The distance is not too great to frighten a high handicapper but will present it's own challenges to those who decide to take the 'Sevvy route' on some of the holes. It's a good course on which to develop your game and it has that secret ingredient that makes youwant to come back for more.

I have played this course twice 1st in June and 2nd at the end of September. The 1st time I played the course I thought it excellent. The 2nd time I thought it soggy, especially the first 4 holes. The ground staff had put in a temporary hole.A short par 3 because the par 4 3rd was under water. The rest of the course across the road was not too bad.Good value pay and play golf but play it after some dry weather this should ensure an excellent round of golf.

Just a note of warning if you play this course at this time of year expect to lose shots and balls on the front 9. The grass off the fairway and even close to the greens is uncut and about 6 inchs long,it cost me 8 shots and a score well below my handicap .On the plus side the back 9 holes are fine the greens are firm and good and they serve real ale .
But please Southwood do something about the early rough .
