I can't think of another public course in the county (that I've played) that is as consistently well-kept, interesting to play, and such great value-for-money. If another exists please let me know! The prices in the pro shop are, in my experience, lower than most specialised golf retail outlets, and you get some great bargains when the sales are on.
Agreeing with another commentator on this website, the clubhouse could do with a refurb.

This has been my "local" course for the better part of 5 years and I never get tired of playing it. It is always in good condition and is incredible value for money. The practice facilities are fantastic for a municipal and are the best value anywhere. (A token card for 6 FULL buckets of balls is only a shade over £8!) The council have allowed the club to spend some money this year and the addition of the Par-3 course is great news. It is an excellent test of short game skills and is equally good value for money at £4-5 a go. And is a great alternative when you don't have 4-5 hours to give to a game.
The pro shop has recently added some "big" industry names to its range of produce and make it an attractive store to shop at.
The club house is aging a little badly but the staff and hospitality is perfectly good and inexpensive and the balcony over the 18th green makes relaxing at the end of a round a pleasure.
Weekends are predictably busy but rounds can be booked well in advance. Over all it has everything that a golfer should want and quite a few holes ask players to shape shots for optimum position, so it isn't a walkover.

Further to my previous posting a brief update. The 9 hole "development course" is now open. Whilst aimed at 6-18 years can be used by all. Holes range from 40-100 yds. Superb strating point for kids and a great short game practice facility for adults

I have played Stockwood Park on and off for a good 20 years or so. Situated 2 minutes from the M1 Jct 10, it is easily accessible.
For a municipal, the course is usually in very good condition, and the green staff appear to make every effort to keep you on the regular greens as often as possible, even in the really poor weather. Given the amount of users this course gets, they should be highly commended for this.
For the medium to high handicapper, it is a reasonable challenge, although I would imagine anybody in single figures would not be to hard pressed.
If you live in Luton, it is worth purchasing a "Green Card" in advance which gives you discounts on the course and range. The card only cost a couple of pounds and you save that on the first round you play.
There is a new 9 hole "pitch and putt" course due to open next Spring 2005. It looks excellent, and will provide an excellent starting point for youngsters.
Overall the course represents excellent value for money - worth a try, if you are in the local area.

I found the welcome from members to be very warm. The fairways and greens are of a very high standard. A very good course for a mid-handicap player like myself
Tim Howick (Bedfordshire) 13/04/03
A good, well kept and cheap course. A lot of people playing from the wrong fairways, but with a bit of patience and manners this isn't a problem. My main gripe when I play here is that at least once in my round I come across a tractor maintaining the greens or fairways. A little better management of the green keepers might erode this most annoying of traits. The bunkers need to be refilled with sand as shallow stoney gravel is what fills almost all of them, but we shouldn't be going in the bunkers anyway I suppose. So in summing up, a good course with a few minor problems but nothing that will stop me revisiting this course again and again.
