What a little gem! We played in a Charity Day competition here on Monday and it really was most enjoyable from beginning to end. The members we met were extremely friendly and welcoming, the course itself, whilst obviously very short, was well maintained and 'cared for', the greens were excellent, and the overall challenge was surprisingly good.

What I also liked about Strawberry Hill was its obvious 'character'. It seemed to me to be a golf club with a 'soul' - 'old-fashioned' in the nicest sense of the word. In some ways it really was like golf used to be...one could well imagine AJ Balfour or PG Wodehouse striding these fairways in plus fours!

If you get the chance to play this course, don't pass it up. I am certainly looking forward to playing it again.

When I was a lad, we lived in a lovely Georgian house at 42 Strawberry Hill Road (which has been razed and flats have been built). My father was a major in the USAF and nearly every evening in the summer, he would take his clubs and play 9 at Strawberry Hill Golf Course. This was in the mid 50's, a Norman Wisdom time to live England. For many years, I wanted to play this course, for often as a 6 or 7 year old boy, I would walk the course with him. A few years ago, I was visiting the UK and played it. What a lovely little gem it is. It does seem a bit smaller than I recall as a 6 year old boy, but of course that was 50 years ago... This course is delightful and I encourage anyone with the time to play 9 and have a pint in the clubhouse. I plan another trip to England next year and this will be the first course I play. A wonderful treat for all golfers with many lovely holes and well maintained greens. And my thanks to the kind staff at Strawberry Hill for their generousity and graciousness.

We received a superb welcome on our arrival and thoroughly enjoyed this short course (£14 for a twilight round). The first is a par 5 which is then followed by perhaps the toughest stretch of par 3's in the country (230, 220 and 250 yards). After that it eases off a bit. The day we played was after a lot of rain and the course was recovering well. The pace was very good and we will return. As a bonus it is right next to Starwberry Hill railway station.

Strawberry Hill is an extremely pleasing, challenging and well kept course. It is not a good course for a 'hacker' nor someone playing off 5. I think it represents good value for money and is usually quiet enough to get round 9 holes inside 2 hours.

However, being an experienced golfer despite my 23 years, I have, on every occasion, felt un-welcome as a visiting golfer. Twice I have been made to return home because of improper dress, even though (and I have played a number of courses) I feel I was adequately attired and within the clubhouse rules. I find little justification in persevering at times to be honest, which is a shame because the course is as good as I have played for such a reasonable price.

I wonder whether a couple of grey hairs and a BMW would help me out here?

Played in February '99. Short, narrow nine-hole course that provides good test of accuracy off the tee and around effective water, tree and bunker hazards. Bit expensive for a nine-hole course but greens were v. well maintained.\r\n
