Daryl Mason (England) 06/10/07

06/10/07 A challanging course with very deceptive par fours, i was disapointed with the greens as there was no consitancy some quick others slow, very disapointed with the tee boxes very uneven, trolly and buggy paths need some attention, with a bit more attention to detail in my oppinion this would be a top course.

Best course (& greens) I have played on in the UK, to date! Please ignore any comments from pre-2006 as I played 2 rounds this summer and couldnt find any evidence of the previous complaints. THE GREENKEEPERS HAVE OBVIOUSLY WORKED HARD ON THIS, THIS YEAR..WELL DONE

Spent two days here 20/21 September 07 (society of 32 players), we have been visiting each year for the past four or five years. This is by far the best condition the course has been in during this time.

The greens were excellent, quick and lots of subtle borrows, be prepared for some 3 Putts.

We stayed in the newly refurbished rooms and they are fantastic, the food was superb as well.

All in all an excellent break and superb value for money. We booked again for next year before we left.

Once the new Spa is up and running next year I think this will be one of the top locations in the country.

Absolutely superb is all I can say about the condition of the greens at this course. Super fast and very true. We played here at the weekend as a society and had an excellent day out. We had bacon butties and drinks on arrival which were cracking. All in all excellent value. We will return very soon providing they keep up the good work on the condition of the course.

Just returned from a golf weekend having played 3 rounds in 3 days. The fairways were very wet and boggy on the Friday following recent heavy rains, but dry weather on Saturday and Sunday they were much firmer and in better condition. The greens were some of the best I have played on for a long time and a real credit with many borrows subtle and unsubtle. Pick of the holes probably the 2nd, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 15th and the 17th which can be a real killer all the way up a steep hill ! Hotel is being completely refurbished and facilities were good if a little tired decor wise(but there are plans and works to change this). Practice and warm up facilities were excellent also. For the price of 150pp for 3 rounds and dinner B&B this was a real bargain. Quality of food was excellent in the evening.

As a member I would like to comment on the constant improvement in playing conditions at Telford. Although the course has had dramatic drainage work carried out (hopefully providing a better course in the winter) it is showing signs of the course it once was.

Just got back from playing 36 holes of golf. Have played here before a few times and always found it excellent. This time it qualified as he worst condition of any course I have ever played. This is a real shame. I hope they can ressurrect the course and provide much TLC.

Played weekend away last year with society & what an excellent course, hotel was ok ish but then its only somewere to change & shower etc. Just returned from weekend away again 24 of us expecting even greater things, 24,25 & 26 June 2006, only played 24th & 25th Paid to play elswere 26th just couldn't bare to try & play on the 26th. Worst course I've ever played & thats not an under statement, even read reports on course b4 we set off but thought? cant be that bad HA, believe me it was, no bunkers in play on back nine front nine ok but very tatty, fairways look like they've been cut by Councils parks & gardens & yes the worst is to come, the greens? my grass at home is better, were there is grass that is, Do Not Go! repeat Do Not Go you will only be wasting ur time & money.Hotel rooms improved by way of new bedding so at least I slept well, food good, beer rubish thats if you could stand the temperature in the bar, believe it or not heating on full Blast. Glad to b home.

Played there 27/10/05 All the talk of suspended watertable greens got me really expecting something special and in respect to the greens I was not disappointed, good speed and true. To be ultra critical they were a little too receptive killing any back spin my ball even plugged a few times. The focus on improving the greens seems to have be at the expense of the course you have to get the ball to the green first and in this wet weather the course does not hold up well alot more mud than I expected.(judging by the forecourt of buggies me thinks to many corporate days not enough carriers) As other player have stated the huge bunkers are devoid of sand and hence fill up with water and stay wet a long time which spoil the round if ypu gat caught out This course must be great to play in the summer time (May-August) but thereafter I would give it a miss it just doesn't hold it's water...no pun intended.

Rafe Dimmock (England) 06/10/05

I visited the course for a two day break with a large group of friends in september 05. I have to say that the fairways and greens were absolutly superb, the greens being suspended water table were extremely receptive but also punishingly quick with some very subtle breaks. The entire course provides an entertaining test of golf with some cunningly positioned hazards. The bunkers are particularly large and quite happy to gobble up stray hits or over ambitious drives; unfortunatly the sand was rather heavy and held alot of water, though it could be seen that efforts were being made to improve the situation the easy solution is "dont go in the them in the first place" A superb course, which i would highly recommend and will be returning to in the near future.

Played the course W/end 11/12 may 2003 with a society,we found the course a good challenge and the whole staff friendly but we all agreed that the bunkers were a disgrace. There was little or no sand in them and also full of large pebble's,I played out of one and a stone about 3" in length followed my ball onto the green damaging my sandwedge face.Surly it would be simple to sieve the sand before it is put into the bunker's.Our weekend was a success but the bunker's need sorting out

After lack of investment over the past few years on the golf course and a shortage of greenkeepers to carry out a massive work load on a course that covers 150 acres things are finally starting to improve.

Due to a new management structure put into place by the General Manager tasks that are long overdue are being started and unfinshed jobs completed. The course was once the envy of many other courses around and was a challenge for all types of players and had a reputation of producing some of the best golfers in Shropshire. The Head Greenkeeper is now working closely with the help of Golf Professional to return the course to how it once was. The greenkeeping team has been increased to 8 strong with new machinery purchased to help them move the course forward.

2003 is going to be the year when Telford Golf Course gets it reputation back to how it should be. "ONE OF THE BEST"

I would like to initially show the text entered by the present President of TGC that is published on another web site

"Telford was the premier course in this area but has fallen into disrepair because there has been no capital investment in the course over the last years. The lack of a drainage repair programme will soon lead to the demise of this once great course

Ralph Williams"

I would further add that recently the green staff have been using an eartquake machine. This has resulted in huge areas of turf being split and gaps formed. This damage could be nullified by watering these areas after earthquaking. At the moment most of the grass in these areas is dead.

If there is anyone who would like photographs of this and other areas of non-conformity with a normal golf course, then please contact me.

Played course 24-26/05/02

Layout - good, gives challenges and options for all levels, well bunkered but water

hazzards never really in play, assume they were just to help with drainage.

Condition - tees & fairways good but needed a trim, assume recent heavy rain had

precluded that. Greens very quick but still a little bobbly so putts had to be firm to hold line, scary scenario on quick greens! Definitely made you think, leaving the ball on the wrong part of the green could be very costly. Bunkers, I am afraid, were ludicrous, sand was compacted not possible to play a shot. I was told heavy rain on the Friday morning was to blame but had still not rectified this when we left on Sunday. They should have been fixed or placed as GUR, very disappointing.

Accommodation - acceptable, rooms a bit shabby but functional.

Staff - very good, friendly, helpful particularly the starter, he really got your round off on the right foot, so used to the normal 'grumpy old git' on the tee that this was really refreshing.

Food - another nice surprise, we all know what these inclusive deals can be like however we found it all to be fresh, well cooked and plentiful. Have these places finally started to realise how important your average male golfers stomach is to him?

OVERALL - would play it again, was better off the whites, but please sort out those bunkers.

Played the course 6th and 7th April this year, the fairways were in very good condition hence the dry spell for 3 weeks, however the greens were in a very poor state, was expecting to play a very challenging course however was rather disappointed to find that the course is infact very average - Good water Hole on the 10th excellent idea, The Hotel accmmodation/facilites are in desperate need of refurbishment - friendly and jolly starter reminded me of J.D Hogg from the Dukes of Hazard!!!

Average course in poor condition. Front nine very boring, second nine slightly better. Not worth a return visit even for free!!!

Jon Lucas (England) 01/05/02

Played the course 28/04/02 with a view to becoming a member. The greens, as said before on this site, are like lightening - unfortunately they are also very bumpy! Hopefully this is only a short-term problem. The biggest problem is the amount of 'hackers' on the course. It took us four and a half hours to play our round - and we were just a two-ball. Shall be thinking very hard about whether to join, as there are far too many apparent non-golfers allowed on the course, especially when fees are nearly £600 per year and green fees £30 at weekends!

Generally a nice course, but expect a lot of hanging around and a lot of three putts!

James Benton (UK) 01/04/02

I visited at the end of March 2002 whilst thinking of becoming a member. The greens were fast as warned, the fairways were wet and poorly drained, and the sand traps huge and as wet as the fairways. I was impressed by the maturity of the trees and wish I had played better to appreciate the challenge. The 10th tee hut is a great idea, but on the other hand the clubhouse is unfortunately a bit of a shambles. Dissappointing.

Greg Langridge (England) 26/03/02

I have played the course on a couple of occasions now and found that the greens were excellent in july 2001 when I played and the fairways in good condition, looking forward to playing it again in march I was dissapointed as the greens were slow and quite tufty!, the fairways were in very poor shape (indeed the drainage here is poor) with the 2nd a par 5 closed for much of the fairway leaving a 150yds par 3.

The best holes I think are 2,6,8,10,13 and 15 the rest didn't inspire much.

A final noteis to play in dry weather hopefully the fairways will be ok and the greens (the best part of the course) will be at their best.

C Bailey (England) 08/08/00

As a member, great course whatever your handicap, with excellent fast greens and plenty of tough challenging holes,2,8,9,14,15,17. Spoilt by packing in societies with or without handicap certificates and very slow rounds, so choose your tee time carefully !! Not a course to play in the winter as poor drainage so take your wellies.

#

(England) 08/06/00

as a member i think the greens are one of the best in the county.however the course generally does not drain very well.it is a good summer course but there are better places to play in the winter.also i think the hotel side of the club interferes to much with the golf side of things and looks after paying societies more than the members.great ladies section!

p kenny (England) 19/04/00

An excellent challenge, especially fof those who prefer fast greens. Always in good condition

holes 2,6,12,17 would be in any of Shropshires best 18
