The Park Player Reports

David Thomas (England) 16/03/08

Having played this course a number of times over the years, in many guises, Tracey Park, The Gloucestershire, and now "The Park" - (everyone knows it simply as Tracey Park so why they want to re-brand it and change the name is beyond me!)and I was therefore looking forward to seeing it again with its newer owners. Playing with a Society midweek in early March, sadly I came away quite dissapointed. With quite a bit of building work being carried on in the main house, all the offices, changing rooms, and bar etc were in portable buildings, adequate, but basic. However, there is no putting green anywhere near the start of the Crown course, so the first putts were literally on the 1st green. Playing the Crown course, we immediately found it to be very wet indeed, despite there being not too much rain in the immediate period, and there were some very boggy areas indeed. However, there were no temporary greens or tees and the course played to its full length. It is not really Fair too rate the greens at this time of year, but like the tempoary buildings, they were adequate, very slow and a bit bumpy, but adequete for March. With two courses now on site, we played the Crown 18, which basically was the original course - all in all, it is a tough old trek in wet conditions with no less than 9 tough par 4's around the 400 yard mark, many though being boring "long slogs". The par 3's do in fact seem to be the nicest holes on the course, and all 5 are quite delightfull, but these cannot make up for the long boring par 4's & 5's which abound, although mention must be made of 15th, The eye of the needle, a very attractive hole, as is the shorter 17th par 4, a dog leg left with a drive over water

Playable indeed, but not worth a big diversion, but oh, why oh why, cannot it be called what everone knows it as...Tracey Park!

Recently played both courses during a break & found each of them to be a real test for the mid-high handicapper. Cromwell is very tight in places whilst the Crown is more open particularly on the front nine. Both fairways & greens were immaculate altho most bunkers could do with considerably more sand. The venue was excellent value & we would seriously consider returning.

There are two great courses here all set in stunning countryside..the accomadation is great (the only minus is the rooms are a little dimly lit) The crommwell is the longer and more challenging but the over all impression is that of value for money with freindly staff.. great food...and a short taxi ride from the center of one of our finest cities...Bath

Played several times over the last year on both courses in both winter and summer.

Overall this is a very 'honest' course with sufficient to enjoy on both courses and at a reasonable price. If anything the Cromwell is a bit more of a challenge than the Crown, if only because the landscape comes into play more, ending in a great approach to the country house.

Practice facilities are open air with a basic range and a pretty mediocre putting area in the court yard which never seems to be the same as the greens out on the course.

Pro shop is well stocked and there is a friendly welcome. Bar and catering are also good. The hotel is a bit strange with the majority of the small number of rooms based around the stables.

Overall a strong recommend.
