Walton Hall Golf Club Player Reports

Walton Hall is a lovely, mature parkland course with fabulous views of the surrounding area. Its one of the most well kept muni's in Britain and a great test of golf.

The course is relatively simple to locate, being signposted from the main road, the entrance is just over a very narrow bridge - make sure you sound your horn before going over! On arrival there is a decent pro shop and facilities include a practise area and a putting green.

Last time I played the course it was in excellent condition - I know from experience however that in winter it can get very wet so check out the weather before playing.

The first is a short par 4 that eases you into the round - there is out of bounds to the right though so slicers beware!

Holes to look out for -

6th - Severely doglegging right, the sixth is a tough hole where longer hitters can go over the trees shortening it dramatically as the fairway slopes downward toward the green. However mis-hit shots will be punished - out of bounds lies down the right. A difficult green awaits also.

7th - Lovely par 3, the brilliance of this hole is that the butty van is your line!! The green is tough and well protected.

9th - Short par 5 with a tricky sloping fairway. Third shots must negotiate a brook that crosses over. The green is testing one, sloping quite sharply.

17th - The penultimate hole is a sharp dogleg right, longer hitters can cut out the yardage by going over the out of bounds practise area. The fairway is steep all the way to the green.

18th - Difficult finishing hole that requires a good assessment off the tee. The hole doglegs to the right but woodland prevents players from cutting the dogleg off. An iron off the tee is a choice for many golfers but leaves a longer second shot in. Lovely hole.

The clubhouse is a welcoming one with a bar area, there is a cafe within the clubhouse and a butty van just after the 7th and 16th holes.

All in all Walton Hall is a cracking course, like all muni's gets busy on weekends, but I've yet to experience any problems. The course has a very private feel and at £15 a round or so is good value for money.

Have played this course a handful of times over the years. It offers a more sedate challenge than the other "big" municipal at Heaton park in Manchester.

If I have any gripes, it's that there are bits of apron around greens which should be designated GUR. The greens yesterday were slow in the extreme. I shouldn't have to wallop the ball with my putter to cross 10 feet of green - come on, greenkeepers, get the mowers out.

Flatten the teeing areas a little more, and reduce the OOB on the 17th to make the big shot over the corner look like a serious option.

There are some ex-bunkers on the course - return them to their intended state, or plant them out with shrubs, and put some rakes near the greenside bunkers.

I only make critical suggestions for courses I actually love playing.

We had a 3 ball on tue 20/03/2007,weather was ok but a bit windy. The course was in fair nick apart from the usual bog half way down the 9th fairway. Most holes were on temp greens but when we played last week there were about 8 normal greens so we were a bit suprised because the course was probably in better condition this week.We didnt mind too much as the green fee was only £8.50.Overall this is a good municipal course which is only going to get better once all the investment begins to show.
