Played the course while visiting the area and left with very contradictory feelings towards the course. The front 9 was a good test with many undulations and no two holes the same. The opposite was true of the back 9, which gave the impression of being a bit of an afterthought, with several holes running back to back where a little more imagination would have gone a long way. The course was in a generally good condition, however at £30 it provided only average value at best, particularly when faced with a temporary tee on 17 and several quite small shared greens. As regards the rest of the facilities, more contradictions, pretty good practice facilities, average bar, sparcely stocked pro shop. Either that or I've been spoilt elsewhere!

During the winter the course still looks very good. But its during the summer months that the course really looks good. This when the fairways are scultured amd mowed with pretty patterns. The tree lines are both prominent and intimidating.
Yes it is a tight course, therefore the "bug hitters" who dont hit straight are severely punished. Accuracy is far more important.
The front nine is the most challenging. Altough it might be considered that the back nine is squeezed into a limited area (back on forth). Here waywrd tee shots may endanger players on adjacent fairways the back nine. But agin the mature tree lines severly punish those errant offline shots.
The greens are very good, where it is not often that they might be considered inconsistent in pace. Some tricky subtle borrows especially when playing very quick. Dont be surprised when a short "down hiller" skirts past the hole and rolls on further than the original putt. GOOD TEST!
Summary. When you have one of those good days, keeping it on the fairway you will be rewarded with a score well below your normal. Whereas on the bad days, unless you area very low handicapper, dont even try to "blast" a recovery shot from off the fairway, take your punishement and simply get back in play in the safest place. Otherwise double, triple bogeys and worse can be expected.

I have been a member at West Chilt since for 10 years now and have to say that this summer it is the best I have seen the course and it ranks alongside the best around. The greens are superb and run true but fast, a good putt is rewarded and a bad putt punished. They also hold the ball well and take spin nicely.
The new greenkeeper has done a wonderful job introducing new bunkers on some holes and getting the greens in such good condition.
The only downsides are the tees which still need a bit of levlling out and the back nine which is a bit 'back and forth'. Although now the trees are taller it still tests your tee shots.
Despite this i would still recommend the course to anyone.

This course was a pleasure to play. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. The fairways and greens were in good condition, however the rough was a little too unkempt. There were a number of challenging holes, the 7th being my most. Overall the experience of playing this course was a good one.
I recommend stopping in at the clubhouse at the end of your round, having a drink with some of the members and chatting to the very friendly and helpful staff all added to the great atmosphere at West Chiltington Golf course.

I played this course at the weekend and I was very impressed with the front 9. The setting is good, there are some excellent holes, with each one offering different tests and some really aesthetically pleasing views. But from about the 10th or 11th onwards, the course went rapidly downhill, with the remaining holes merging into one another, with nothing different to offer and by the time the 18th came around, I was just glad to nearly be finished. It's back and forth back and forth over the last 6 holes which was a disappointment because ut had offered so much early on.
I found the greens not running true at all - there was little consistency from one to another and whilst some of the bunkers were outstanding, others were a little more than concrete with a wispy layer of sand underneath which meant you couldn't get your club under the ball to flop it out onto the green.
I had read that the fairways were in poor condition, but I found them to be good.
Generally, the course was fair and if the back nine resembled the front, they would truly have an excellent package.

I have played this course a few times due to inter-club matches. Lovely, gentle setting but the fairways are positioned too close together and balls are in danger of flying across. not too well maintained (either, grass cuttings all over the place or, semi-rough too thick to find ball - masses of clover). Also dreary in that "surely I have played this hole before"! Overall, not a difficult course to play, pretty suitable for high handicappers.
