West Derby Golf Club Player Reports
David F THOMPSON (England) 04/07/08
I only speak as a member and would welcome any views friom visitors, but West Derby is now 112 years old and has developed into a demanding parkland course. Not overly long and not very physically demanding, but you will need every shot in your box of tricks to come anywhere near mastering it.
There is a brook that comes into play in the first nine on 7 holes and a pond that comes into play twice. The back nine is slightly longer and always regarded as the tougher side of the course. It also has a pond which comes into play mainly on one hole only although an errant shot on the previous hole could also find trouble.
There are a number of doglegs, but no unkind blind holes, where you don't know where you are going. The holes are tight from a driving test, with tree lined fairways, one commented on by old time pros as the Sunningdale of the North, although we prefer the title, the Wentworth of the North. You will also find the greens are considered tight in their approaches and size.
We pride ourselves on the quality of the lush fairways and greens and the quality of welcome from the management and staff.
We are a private members club, with open membership at teh moment, although applicants should come with referees. However, we are willing to examine applicants without such.
