Played the course for the first time 22/09/06 and was a little disappointed with the overall experience.

The first is a very strange starting hole: It's a short par-four (250-odd yards) but is severely uphill for the final 100 yards - the hole is tree-lined and you tee-off across the road entrance to the course (beware of crossing cars), so it could be a bit intimidating for the higher handicapper.

The course is extremely hilly in places and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are reasonably fit. The front nine is shorter and easier (with three par-threes) than the back nine. Didn't really like the rows of bushes crossing the full width of several fairways, as it was too much like driving a ball over Beechers Brook - hazards are fine, but these bushes even protect one of the greens and that's too punitive in my opinion.

Greens were in good condition and although we played in rain for much of the day, the course stood up to it well.

A few people in our party found some of the club staff a little unwelcoming, though I must say that our starter was friendly and helpful.

Played 16th March, when windy, cold and in sleety snow. The greens look absolutley awful which is a comment made to me by a member, and he was right. A lot of borrows subtle and not so, but still, the look was horrible. Very hilly and I was pleased to have hired an electric trolley at a very good rate, albeit it was a Powakaddy and should have been a Hill Billy because of the hills! Played the back 9 better probably because the front was poor and I relaxed a lot then. When the greens have been addressed and some sun hits the fairways I can imagine this to be a good course. The members we met were friendly and helpful, pro shop helpful and friendly, all in all not too bad a day.

played this course today (30/08/05) we whent into the pro,s shop and he was very nice and help full.we then made our way down to the first tee were we herd some members moaning about the youth players??? the course was very busy and it was quite obvious that we was going to be in for a slow round but it was a nice day so we wernt worried until we got to the third green where upon some lady members decided to have a moan at us from 130yds away about the fact that they were waiting although we couldn,t go any were because the people on the next fairway were still in range. the course it,self was in very good condition and was quite tight in places. but maybe this should become amembers only course because it was obvious to us that they did not like visitors on there course even though we were paying £45.00 for the round. and they are advertising for members??? not for me im afraid.

Played West Essex on a Twilight Ticket, half the usual green fee, probably because despite the lovely evening, no-one was around to play. Decided to play because of it's proximity to Chingford station, left my desk in the City at 5pm and was teeing off at 6pm including the time it took to change, very handy.

Anyway the course was in excellent condition, greens were smooth and of moderate pace, bunkers, tees and fairways perfect. Front nine which are cut through the forest are quirky but interesting and supply fantastic views over NE London and Essex. Back nine are more open but the length makess this 9 the most challenging. Tees are a little to close to other fairways and greens so on a busy day it could be a bit hairy but apart from that a good time was had by all.

DTI Golf Society visited this course in May. We had a fantastic day with weather to match. The course was presented extremely well, from the condition of the practice area (off grass!), to the excellent tees, fairways and greens. It would be difficult to find criticism with any part of this course for a society day. The only oddity apart from the barmaid’s aversion to pulling a pint of Guinness is the rather strange first hole that many of our mid to high handicappers found a little too challenging for a starting hole. In common with other reviewers, we found every one of the club's members or staff we came across to be exceedingly welcoming. In short, in addition to being happy to return privately or as a society member, I would gladly be a member of this club.

There should be a safety warning printed on the scorecard. At least two of the greens are far too close to the tees for the next hole and the chances of getting hit by a miscued shot are very real. Despite the stunning views over East London, this is not a memorable course. The final three holes..up to the clubhouse for the 16th, back down for the 17th and then up for the 18th can be tiring. No wonder some members decide to retire when coming off the 16th green.
