Weston-super-Mare Golf Club Player Reports

Second links course that I have played this summer down in the south-west of England and only my fifth ever. Weston-Super-Mare is separated from the very broad beach by a single dune ridge that stops you seeing/hearing the sea all but for two holes at the far southern end of the course. Played with my wife who is an infrequent golfer but a good striker when she gets going – the lack of overall length and no nasty carries from the tee do make this a good golfing holiday option. Weston is a good fun course to play and one you can get round quite quickly at only just over 6,000 yards of the yellows.

Course is quite flat as it is not really on dune-land, some of the greens have good slopes on them such as the 3rd and the 8th; the latter was my favourite hole a modest length par 5; a par 4 on many other courses at 446 yards of the yellows. The best stretch of holes are the first five all of which lie closest to the sea; quite fun to walk through the little caravan park that separates the 4th green from the 5th tee. Good run of holes again as you can back towards the clubhouse; the 7th is the best of the par 3s to a crowned green set against a bank with some pot bunkers in front. Unusually the 9th leaves you still in mid-course, it is the 10th that takes you back to the clubhouse. Starting your round from the 11th is a good option if you like to finish nearer the clubhouse. Some of the later holes lose a little of the seaside feel however the 18th is a good strong finishing hole at well over 400 yards.

We were fortunate to play on a hot and sunny day with little breeze, so very much aware that this would be a different test when the wind is up. Facilities fine, old lockers in changing rooms were stunning - antiques, with hand-stamped numbers on very old wood panelled fronts. Clubhouse very quiet, what I imagine is the spike bar was pretty basic and lounge bar ok’ish what I did find odd was the small terrace outside which looks over the putting green and is adjacent to the tail-end of the 10th hole … a great spot to sit but a hideous net obscured it … why not just white posts and a sign to say if you sit here watch the golfers? Value for money ok too, just £36 each and £3 for a planner – as good as one that cost double the price at Bowood a few days ago. I was asked for a handicap certificate which I didn’t have with me but my club bag-tag sufficed although he didn’t actually come out and check. Parking would be at a premium on busy days by the way.

I would compare this links with Minehead further down the Somerset coast where I played with my brother back in May of this year. Minehead’s greens were quicker and despite the slightly claustrophobic nature of those links I enjoyed the hole variety there a little more but I would recommend this as a course to play most definitely if you are in the Bristol area. Both can be done easily in a day from Bristol provided that the M5 is not mis-behaving which it seems to do quite frequently in the summer months.

Played in August 2005. Using 2fore1 vouchers worked out a not unreasonable £28 for the day. Excellent links course with beautiful greens. Not a long course but all holes are tricky and require good straight shots. I could be happy playing this course everyday. During the afternoon the wind got up and it was far more difficult, and I think there is no better challenge than a beautifully kept links course with a stiff breeze! Funny how the course emptied of members once the wind got up!

I will look forward to playing here again.

Good course, great greens, lovely sunny Sunday afternoon, but... completely empty, probably a result of the outrageous £54 green fee. Still worth the occasional visit with a 2-fore-1 voucher, but not a great value-for-money course any more. Not sure how you can justify such a price rise when the course itself hasn't changed at all, either in layout or condition.

Played here again in July and was shocked at the astronomical 100% price hike. The net result was a nice course on a nice day with nobody on it. Maybe the Weston faithful are making a statement about the new price?

I played this course on Sun 18/5/03 – on a 2fore1 rate. This was my 1st experienced of a links course and once I got used to the wind and the fact that 4 fairways seem to merge into one at the first, I really enjoyed it. Great views, and some really great holes. My only gripe was the £54 a round charge – the course is nice but I’m not sure it’s worth that much, having said that the food in the clubhouse was excellent value!
