Wilpshire Golf Club Ltd Player Reports

I've played Wilpshire on two occassions now, once in poor weather, once in good weather.

I have to be honest and say it isn't one of my favourite courses and certainly isn't one I'd rush back to play. But why, I'm not really sure as I can't quite put my finger on it.

Sometimes you don't play a course well and it clouds your judgement, but I scored well both times I played it so it can't be that.

I think, if I'm honest, it's the "ok" factor that has got in my mindset.

The greens were ok, but I've played on better. The course layout is ok, but again nothing special. There are no holes that really stick in the mind as being super signature holes, but there are none on the other hand that are particularly poor - they are just ok.

Finding your way to the Clubhouse bar as a visitor is not the easiest thing to do. The staff were helpful but not over friendly, but at the same time were not discourteous. Again, they were "ok".

If you're invited to play it, by all means go along and check it out. But I have to say it's the only way I'd probably return to play, I doubt very much I'd pay to play it again in the future.

At 5843 yards and par 69 (ladies 72), the course is not long by comparison these days but it has two good par 5’s and five par 3’s, none of which are that easy. The combination of parkland and moorland with the threat of deep rough and a few water hazards can make a round challenging enough especially for the player who is driving off line. Originally designed by James Braid, maximum advantage is taken from the varied terrain as the first six holes use trees and greenside bunkers to catch the unwary. Even the wayward golfer is rewarded at the 7th tee where you suddenly realise that the full glory of the Ribble Valley is at your feet with majestic views to Blackpool and the Fylde in the west and Pendle Hill and the three peaks in distant Yorkshire off to the east.

Holes 7 to 14 are played on the top of the hill where the grass is wiry and the rough is thick. At 15 you drop back to the greener and lusher fairways and the 18th passes the clubhouse where your mates stand on the balcony, pint in hand, watching your approach shot …. sometimes too closely!

I thoroughly enjoy this course every time I play it, even when the golf leaves a bit to be desired.
