Wimbledon Common Golf Club Player Reports
Mark Simpson (England) 18/04/08
An extremely friendly club just around the corner from Putney, Hammersmith, Richmond etc. From what I have experiences, a good mix of old boys and young guns. True, some of the par 3s are tough, but the quality of the greens for a public course is phenomenal. Compare this to Richmond or such like, and suddenly you realise the value of Wimbledon Common.
Ideal practice for straight driving and honing the short game. The key to a good round here is straight, controlled hitting of the tee, and using the contours with the chips and approaches.
Love the fact that it is a public common, so tree-lined on almost every hole, and on some of the fairways large trees to drive over or around.
An excellent and diverse challenge of 18 holes on a beautiful and picturesque stretch of common. Highly recommended.

This is an underrated course which is a stone's throw yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of London.
It's a tough start from the Wimbledon Common GC end (as opposed to the London Scottish end) with a mere 228 yd par 3 for your first shot followed by SI 1 438 yd par 4 and a tricky but beautifully situated 171 yd blind par 3 at the 4th.
However, get through that and there are birdies available at a number of short par 4s (5 of which are under 300 yards), especially with a fair bit of run in the summer.
However, any shots you make up here you might struggle to hold onto at some of the outrageously long par 3s, particularly the 12th which is 242 yards and intimidatingly narrow, and the 8th (229 yds).
Also, while some fairways are generous, if you're wayward off the tee expect to be chipping out sideways from the trees where the Wombles live (or weren't they underground?)
The best hole on the course is the wonderful 389 yd par 414th – aptly titled 'Paradise' – which is a great driving hole and then demands a high-flighted shot to a beautiful green encircled by firs.
This is a common land course so no the fairways aren't perfect but they're good enough and the greens run true and consistent.
If you're in West London and are looking for a convenient round then I'd strongly advise giving all the public courses (e.g. Richmond Park) a very wide berth, donning your pillar-box red top, and heading off to meet the Wombles.

Easy and friendly place for a round, and the course was almost empty playing mid-week.
The walkers right of way is a bit of a pain, and the fairways are a bit hap-hazard but the greens are good and there are some really challenging par 3's.
Overall - excellent value, and some interesting holes - great for a quick knock if you live in London.

The person who commented on 18/05/00 obviously had a "bad hair day". The course is in magnificent condition and the club is going from strength to strength. We offer superb value for money aned I doubt you would find a friendlier group of people or a nicer place to play golf. PS: James Vintcent is no longer the Secretary.

I think the course offers the best value golf in and around London. It has a small but relaxed and friendly Clubhouse . I found it very welcoming.
While some of the fairways are a bit worn the greens are in great condition . I understand local "common ground" byelaws restrict maintenance of the fairways to a basic level.
Some challenging par 3's . A pleasant surprise to find a club like this inside the M25!
