Windmill Hill Golf Centre Player Reports
Kevin Shinner (England) 25/07/07
Played Windmill last sunday after having not played there for a while and it has matured into a fine golf course and a real good test for the lower handicap golfer. Even though very wet from all the rain recently the course played well and for £22.00 a round at weekends is well worth it.
Will be back shortly without a doubt.

We found the course played quite well, despite all the recent rain and snow, although certain parts of the course are still very wet.
Greens are extremely large throughout, although not of a great standard and quite gritty and bumpy.
Would like to play again the summer months when course will no doubt play better.
The club shop however was excellent and extremely well stocked.

As far as a municiple course goes this plays extremly well, for those seeking silk like greens, bunkers full of fine sand, few tree hazzards I suggest spending more money and playing a private club, for those just starting golf or those seeking somewhere a little more of a challage, well this course goes a long way to provide an intresting round, the staff encourage the novice to continue persuing a sport that is now the most popular in the UK. I have never been to a better stocked pro shop, a novice as well as the seasoned pro will be made welcome by friendly staff who love the game and talk plain English to those starting out. I found a sign on the 9th tee with a phone number for refreshments before starting the back 9, "great idea" as far as the course and holes, a real challange long par 5's a very healthy 225 yard par 3, the 10th tee provides an intresting drive, I have been back and intend to again.

This is a great course in the summer months , but i have played here 2 times in the past fortnight 22/10/2005 and 31/10/2005 and i would strongly recommend not playing here at the moment. The fairways are covered in leaves so even hitting straight down the center you will be lucky to find your ball (if you go off the fairway your in real trouble).
I know leaves are a problem this time of year but this is ridiculous.
I will play here again but not until mid late november when they should ? , have cleared the leaves.

Windmill, like Abbey Hill, like Wavendon - has the makings of a decent course, hell it is a decent course. The oldest public course in the area (only the ever snobby Aspley Guise is older) and like Wavendon, it does what it tries to do well.
It tries to introduce people to the game of golf who want to have a good time without taking it too seriously - if you want serious golf, play a serious golf course! Someone earlier was complaining about lack of dress code - to which Id say get a life! Or play another course...
That doesnt mean Windmill is a bad course. In summer it plays long and I doubt many players break par. However, the problem is I'm looking for a stand out hole to tell you about and really there isnt one - theres a couple of nice holes such as the long par 5 4th, the par 5 9th, and the par 4 11th are all decent holes - but they wont be anything out of the ordinary.
The fairways are usually OK - the greens usually run true - and the tees are usually decent, its a enjoyable round. However, the course doesnt help itself - I have played around it during the muddy season when frankly it should be closed, the temp tees are rubbish and the greens get bumpy and unmown.
That said - I'd still play it over Abbey Hill if only because their not as pretentious - despite Abbey clearly being the more varied and testing course (and more expensive).
Windmill offers excellent value for money weekdays - the cheapest Ive ever come across - and does a cracking brunch - for a place to learn to play it does a excellent job - if you want a hard course then play 3 locks/Millbrook/Beadlow Manor...

I played this course in May 2005. The fairways are in very good condition, the rough is trimmed to manageable length. Indeed the course seems well looked after. However the greens! They are slow and very bumpy, putting is a lottery. As someone else has posted the bunkers generally have builders sand which sets hard. Several bunkers do not have rakes but I guess that this is to be expected on a course which is surrounded by houses. The course also seems to be used for people walking their dogs etc. On several holes there were people just wandering about the fairways. Pity as this spoils a nice golf course which just needs a few more 'features' to make it a little more exacting and interesting. It does play long.
