Just a quick addition to my views below - played the course today (Sunday 25 June 07), the greens were absolutley fantastic, the course in excellent condition.

I've played Woolton on numerous occasions over the last 10 years, more recently as part of our society. My views given are based on the last day out there.
On arrival we were greeted by the friendly pro who informed us that there was a slight delay because of a ladies competition which was fine. We therefore took advantage of the basic practise facilities on offer (putting green, practise bunker and chipping area).
The course is quite an attractive parkland layout, cut in half by a road after the 8th hole.
Holes to look out for -
6th - Long par 4 to a narrow but downhill fairway, protected by 2 bunkers. Second shots are uphill to a large green.
9th - Tough dog leg par 4 with out of bounds all the way down the left. Higher handicappers should treat this one as a par 5, better players will face a difficult uphill second to a flat green.
17th - Extremely narrow, testing par 4, anything left or right off the tee could wreck the card.
The clubhouse lets the club down unfortunately - its very old fashioned and desperatly cries out for a makeover, the members on the whole quite friendly however I've come across some rather disconcerning characters who seem to dislike visitors - on this particular day my playing partner took his trolley too close to a bunker (not in my opinion) to which a bloke from the clubhouse came out and told him off in front of everyone. NOT the way to be treated.
The course has also deteriorated since I first played it - the greens were in rather poor condition, the fourth hole was temporary with the worst tee mate we've ever played from. This is a shame since it had always been one of the best in the city.
Overall Wooltons a decent test of golf however it could do with a good revamp - and to loose those old fashioned values.

My home club and there is no doubting that this is amongst the best courses in the city of Liverpool. Perhaps not incredibly challenging it is tight however, and tree lined fairways will punnish errant drives. In summer the greens can be very good indeed.

This is a fine parkland course, with good greens and tight fairways. The clubhouse dates back to the 19th century and has a friendly and welcoming style.
