Worksop Golf Club Player Reports

We played Worksop on Friday 6th June with our society, it was a last minute thing as we'd had problems with our other June booking. Luckily one of our socitiey members dad was a member and the course very kindly arranged three tee times for us. The deal we were given was absolutley fantastic and it just made the day even more enjoyable. The course is quite frankly superb in my opinion, the back nine I especially enjoyed set in woodland, so accuracy off the tee is important. There are also various holes with dog legs so your driver isn't always the best option off the tee. The general condition of the course was excellent and the greens were testing and true. Even at normal green fee rates this course is well worth the money and a pleasure to play. I was that impressed I enquired about membership. One of the best courses in the area, very accomodating, good value and an excellent round of golf. Brilliant !

An excellent course which offers a wide variety of very interesting and challenging holes. It is a course that you need to think your way around - accuracy off the tee is an absolute 'must' even if this means leaving your driver in the bag at times!
We found the course and its greens to be in impeccable condition and thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon round. By the way, don't miss the mini-display of Lee Westwood's Ryder Cup equipment when you visit the clubhouse.

Played last week on the £25 Winter Package that included a very nice meal afterwards and was very impressed by Worksop.
The course is as described by Phil Dolby but what can't be overstated is quite how well the course drains. It is nothing short of unbelievable and the number of other courses closed in the area when we played were testament to that.
Highlights of the round for me were the shortish dogleg par 4 5th with its 3-tier green, along with the following par 5 6th and the fantastic 9th hole which played as a dramatic dogleg. In fact that was part of a run of classic woodland holes with some fantastic surroundings.
After taking on the closing par 3 in front of the clubhouse we used our food vouchers and had a very nice pie, chips and peas. All the staff including Secretary, Pro and Assistant and the catering ladies were fantastic.
Couldn't be faulted. 10 out of 10.

Worksop is a classic English woodland course. I've played there on and off for 20 years, scoring everything from 82 to 102. It is and always has been a true test of golf; at times enticing, at others confounding and frustrating.
When I was a junior member, briefly in the early 80's, the layout of the course was radically different to today. In my opinion it was better then than now - but doubtlessly many disagree.
The first 2 holes lull the player into a false sense of security. Relatively benign, these two medium length par 4's are both reachable in a drive and a mid iron. If you come off with two opening pars, well done because it's all about to change....
The third is Worksops signature hole; a long par three with two sheer faced bunkers guarding the front of a long sloping green. You need to hit a long iron very straight about 200 yards - push it right and you're in the trees, left the gause! Should you make the green you could be rewarded with a forty foot putt down hill, where trying to get the ball to lag for a tap-in can be a nightmare! Any par on this great hole is a real achievement.
Next you head away from the clubhouse for 5 relatively easy holes (depending on tee positions). A mixture of par 3's, 4's and 5's will take you "accross the path" and deep into Nottinghamshire Forest.
Holes 9 and 10 are two long ones! From the winter tee the 9th plays as a dog-leg par 5, down a narrow fairway to a 2 tier green with a wicked slope. This is easy! compared to the summer when it is played as a straight par 4 requiring two good 3 woods to get you there in regulation. The 10th is a slightly (but not very much) easier dog-leg par 5, guarded by forest on either side. You will be glad of a break by the short par 3 11th....
Coming home begins with the deadly 12th (straight, narrow and surrounded by trees), and the challenging 13th (long par 4 up out of a gully, dog-legging to a green a good long iron away). 14, 15 and 16 that follow will give you some time to get your nerves back before another classic hole.
The 17th runs along-side the A57 bypass. From a lofty tee, the green seems enticing, but woe-betide any push to the right (out of bounds) or pull to the left (thick rough). Once up to the green the slope can make an idiot of the best putter!
Finally, the 18th is a true grandstand finish. Members can sit in the club house, sipping pints and watching player after player tee off on this fairly short par 3. Bunkers to the right and left will trap a wayward shot, as will out of bounds in the car park. If you make the green, then once again you are confronted with a massive slope that can carry a ball further from the hole than when you started - never has leaving yourself with an "up-hiller" been more important than here.
All in all, although not massively long, Worksop is a challenge and a true test of golf. It changes with the seasons and from hole to hole, but if you've never played there I highly recomend it.
Lee Westwood is Worksops most famous old boy, and holds the course record (I think) of 67 which is five under par. Only when you've played there can you truly appreciate how good this really is.
